We are in the process of putting together a 0.030" over 440 and I have a question about cam choice and piston to valve clearance. The engine is going in a 72 Roadrunner that will be a weekend driver/drive to car shows kind of car that likely will never see a dragstrip or 5500+ rpm.

Bottom end is together using 2355 Speed Pro's (yes, I know they are heavy). As assembled pistons are 0.016"-0.018" in the holes and have the small factory valve reliefs. We have a set of 440 source stock heads that we will be using along with mopar performance stock stamped rocker arm assemblies.

My question is this: Can we use a Hughes Whiplash cam with this setup and have sufficient piston to valve clearance? Ran in to a car with this cam at a show and the sound was awesome. As I said before we are not building a race engine but do want to be able to "spin a tire" on occasion. Car has a 727 tranny and a 3.55 sure grip. This is our first mopar build so we don't want to screw up.

BTW cam specs are as follows:

Camshaft Technical Details
Intake Valve Lift 1.5
Exhaust Valve Lift 1.5 .518"
.518"

Intake Valve Lift 1.6
Exhaust Valve Lift 1.6 .552"
.552"

Intake Duration at .050"
Exhaust Duration at .050" 232°
245°

Lobe Separation Angle 107º

Intake Opening at .050"
Exhaust Opening at .050" 14° BTC
54.5° BBC

Intake Closing at .050"
Exhaust Closing at .050" 38° ABC
10.5° ATC

Thanks in advance.

Always check piston to valve clearances and the actual cam timing, location, in the motor The reason being is the dots on the cam and crank gear as well as the cam can be off a little bit or a bunch

As stated, you really need to check your as you mock everything up. That being said, it should clear fine with the factory style valve reliefs if the camshaft is timed correctly.
