Hey all, I toasted the 340 in my '72 Demon on a chassis dyno several months ago and it's getting about time to drop a new mill in her. My father and I have discussed our options, but there's so many choices out there, I figured I'd stop in here to gather some opinions... So, here's my general criteria: I'm not looking for anything crazy. It is primarily a street & show car and is raced very infrequently. As such, I'm more concerned with reliability and affordability than absurd power numbers and flashy top end bits... In other words, no 600hp race gas motors or expensive six packs, etc. My intended budget range is in the neighborhood of $6k. Less for a decent setup would be great, but I'm not trying to skimp on the heart of the car, either. Must run on pump gas, but a relatively aggressive cam is ok because I'll be changing the converter anyways. Vacuum isn't a concern as I run manual brakes. There's a couple I've been considering lately, but I want to hear your guys' opinions before I share mine! Thanks in advance! -Josh

I won't build another stock stroke engine after building my stroker. A post I saved with different stroker builds. http://www.mopar1.us/stroker.htmlI personally pieced mine together but that was quite a few years ago.

You can pick up a stroker "kit" for a decent price, there are a number of them around. Also with the stroke you will be picking up a fair amount of torque which is always best for the street. While your engine is down have the heads freshened up and maybe clean up the pockets, this is where you get the greatest increase in HP on a port job. I dont know about your converter(where it stalls) but as you increase torque you also get a increase in stall on the converter

Thanks guys, but I am looking for a crate motor to drop in it, not a stroker kit.

The Blueprint engines carried by Jegs and Summit seem like a good deal but I know one board member had a few QC problems with the one he bought. A shop called Carolina Machine (IIRC) has been advertising good prices in the last couple of issues of Mopar Muscle. Can't speak for quality on any of them but just some suggestions.

sounds like your best bet would be to just rebuild the 340 and save the cash since your not looking for a stroker or anything out of the ordinary, just build a good stock bottom end, keep the cr up around 9.5 to 10, do a good VJ open the bowls and use good valves, maybe a vodoo cam or comp with hi lift, rpm intake and 750 dp should put you up over 400 hp, have someone give you the name of a good shop in your area, the quality would probably be better then a crate someone puts together on their first day on the job

if you don' have a local guy you want to build it you could call up some of the guys here on the site quite a few good engine builders here and use you block.
Keep in mind anyone who will build you a crate stroker will be using a recond. block anyway as the new blocks are over $2000. dollars.

I appreciate all of your input. The problem is, I don't have the time to assemble all of the parts necessary for a rebuild on this motor too (I'm already building my own 512 B-motor stroker) and there aren't really any shops reputable enough in my area that I would trust with the job anyways (hence why I'm building my own big block). Also, time is somewhat of a concern, and from the feedback I've gotten from several builders, there could be a couple months turnaround time plus shipping and all that crap... As such, we decided on getting a long-block crate motor (stroker or otherwise) and putting the 340 into storage with two of my other engines.

I got my stroker kit from (410) www.strokerkits.com. I even had them CNC the block and ballance it. Then they took it to an engine assembler with a clean room and had it assembled.. Cheaper then a crate engine, just took all summer and fall to get it done.

Contact member OU812... http://www.immengines.com Great reputation & he'll take good care of you...
Brian is a real good guy. You should be able to get a real good running deal for under 6K. I think DemonKyles engine came in at under 4K, might have been closer to 3500. It was a mild 360 build, xe268H, iron heads, made right at 350hp/400 tq. Runs real good.
Josh you still with the BBD picture lady?
I might be headed over that way fairly soon. Could help transporting it one way for you if you decided on using Brian.

Just an update,
My dad and I dropped off the 340 at Maurer's today. His place was only a couple miles from my parent's house, and Dennis seems like a good guy and he runs a real clean shop, so we picked him to do the work. There were two nice A-bodies in his garage when we stopped by, too.
Thanks again all for the recommendations! -Josh

Glad to hear you chose Maurer's. Keep us posted on how your engine build is coming as well as what you decide for your build.
