anyone used this ready to run inexpensive setup?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-PLYMOUTH-4...9ad&vxp=mtr

If so, what do you think about it? Just seems to good to be true being as inexpensive as it is. Even the petronix conversion is more money than this..

Never used it but the technology has been around for a while. I have a friend (GM guy ) who has modified the original HEI distributor with a Chrysler style of shaft. He runs them in derby cars religiously. Its definitely an advantage over any of the original Chrysler ignitions. Hook up one wire from the switch and done.

...FAFO...

there was a thread awhile back on those "skip white" dists & I dont remember what the concensus was. I agree it is dirt cheap so something has to be cheap in regards to it you'd think as there ain't no free lunches. One option I would mount an HEI module to the bottom of a chrysler dist and someone (eBay?) sells a tailor made alum plate for that but it is pricey (~$30 iirc) & you could easily make one your self & be sure to use heat sink paste between module/plate & Radio Shack sells a mini tube of that HS. I believe your problem is elsewhere

. I know I am going to do these tests you all listed. But I still do want something that puts out better spark thazn the stock stuff, and I do like the simplicity of the ready to run setups.

Just going to be a cheap chinese thing..makes you wonder about replacement parts or what/if quality it has to it?

Looks sort of like a copy of a Bosch distributor they used in Oz in various makes.

What about going with a petronix on a stock distributor?

I used one on my last 408 stroker and it perked it up over the stock distributer. I ran it for a year and then sold the truck. Buyer is still running it.

I read about it here on moparts but don't recall what I read.

look at speedmaster.com for cheap billet pro-comp dist also.

billet SB or BB dist cheap 59$-79$

matter of fact, they have the same elect fuel pump that I buy at my local speed shop for 120$ for 40$ free shipping too.

I have started buying from speed master for most of my needs even though the speed shop has the EXACT same thing on the shelf. get 3x as many parts/free shipping for same $ with speed masters.

pays to shop around sometimes

A friend of mine has one on a 440 in his 58 Savoy "Christine " look a like car. Remove the external chrome cover and it runs forever. That piece covers up some electronics that are mounted to an aluminum heat sink plate. Keeping the cover on it make the electronics heat up to the point the motor craps out.

The distributor in the OP is marketed by dozens of vendors, it uses a CPU from an Australian Holden Commodore. I had one go bad and the replacement CPU costs more than the whole distributor.

Looks a lot like the older GM style cpu.

I am willing to try that
I was going to use the Mallory CD Ignition (comparable to the MSD) that I got for the racer, but I used it in the '87 truck when I converted from the LeanBurn that was giving me grief. I had to buy a vacuum advance distributor to make that work, so in the end I had at least $350.00 in a new ignition system and it does work fine, but for $44.50 + shipping with a lifetime warranty (read the ad) why not?
I am willing to be on the "bleeding edge"

I have one out of a Holden on the shelf actually.

Again, they were a Bosch unit.

After reading this I'd say drop one in (take the cover off) and purchase a spare & wrap it up airtight in a plastic bag (with dessicant if possible) & store it in the trunk

Ya thats the only problem is what if it craps out on the road somewhere..I would have to have a second one in the trunk which makes it not so cheap if i have to buy 2..I emailed the seller and asked about the life of the ECU, he just said, 'It has a lifetime warranty"..

wondering if this will indeed have a much better spark than the stock stuff..
actually, there are 4 different ready to run units, 2 require an external coil and 2 do not..

Now, which one would you go for?

I just found something i like best, mainly because i can keep my current mopar electronic distributor which i already have the advance setup on. This is very cool. Should give me the boost in spark i need. check it out, anyone used this setup?

The seller, skip white, said i could buy an extra module from him to carry with me as a spare for 5.95!
How the heck can it be good if that cheap?

It looks like they don't have one for the 383, so now I won't be tempted to use it.
