people have done it with no issues usually just from spacing that it goes on the pass side which afaik is just assembly line uniformity tho I dont know why they chose the pass side (must be a reason). If swapped the axle(s) would now be torqued/twisted opposite & not sure if that would/could cause an early demise issue like on a torsion bar up front

I believe the idea behind putting the adjuster on the right is because, if the lock tab doesn't work, the adjuster will tighten due to forward wheel rotation rather than loosen.

I've been told by Mark Williams to never swap axles from side to side I had told a freind who had a set of Mark Williams race axles that where twisted in the spline on the left axle to swap them, it broke that one at the races the next time out Don't swap them side to side
That is right on target, axles take a "set" to the dirction of torque, Axles are designed to absorb the twist but not break. reversing the axles can be instant trouble.

Bending a paper clip theory there, more-so if they're twisted. I haven't experienced issues swapping "good" axles, Jeep people do that all day between rigs and go run them pretty hard. As soon as their twisted/yielded, you shouldn't run them hard in reverse or swap sides IMO.
