Hi,

I have a 68 Barracuda with a 340, manual trans, power steering and Doug's headers. I have had a tough time trying to remove the driver's side header and I was wondering what you guys have learned over the years to get the job done. The biggest hindrance has been the power steering chunk. The headers are right up against it. I have jacked-up the engine block, but it didn't buy me much. I do not have a lift, btw.

Thanks!

Ya could try cutting the steering all the way to the right or left to move centerlink out of the way. Might help.

Steering wheel/tires are turned all the way to the right. Didn't seem to help much. I took the starter out, which provided a little more wiggle room.

I know its a PITA but why not just remove the PS box?
I put manual steering on the Dart when I built it just to make everything a little easier, and lighter.

Are you trying to pull it out from the top or bottom? I'd think a SB wouldn't be that bad. I'd jack up the drivers side of the engine, get the car up in the air and remove it from under the car. You could always pull the steering column, it doesn't even have to be all the way out just enough so you can move it around out of you way.

Uou dont want to just lift the engine, you want to tilt it over towards the passangerside passangerside can stay low, that will give you a bunch more space, have the car up on fairly tall jackstands then you just tilt the header collector downwards while pulling the header backwards and down,it will come out just have alitle patience. also you might need to take the centerlink of the steeringarm to gain alitle more clearance but not sure if its needed with Dougs it sure helps with TTI

With the Dougs in my b body I didn't even have to undo the steering linkage. Not sure how much tighter an A body would be. I simply put the car up on jack stands, released the tension off the suspension, removed the torsion bars, undo one motor mount so that when you jack up the motor it tilts, remove starter, sparks plugs etc as well. And cutting the steering wheel hard also made a little extra room. Then do the same to the other side.

A body is a little tighter than the B Body, but it is still doable. I think he may not have it high enough to allow the header to drop down at the collector.

I have the head, z-bar and starter out so far. The header is now hitting the steering link; so that is coming out next. I am rebuilding the front suspension anyway. Steering link and then the torsion bar.

I agree, I probably don't have the car up high enough. Oh, well. Once the t.b. comes out, it will be a piece of cake!

I have the heads off to learn more about the engine. I plan on having them flowed, new springs, seals, clean the valves, etc. I also plan on figuring out what the cam is. Learning is cool.

I know you are already deep into it, but DIY Garage in Westminster has lift time for rent and can even give you a hand.. for a fee, of course. I did the transfer case on my Durango there.
