Hey gang.
Friend of mine is restoring a Oct. 69 SPD 1970 Hemi 'Cuda with 4Speed. Would this car have the reverse lock-out mechanism as part of his standard steering wheel column assembly? Any pictures of the setup would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance.

Did the lockout rod that extends from the steering column to the pivot shaft get thicker (larger diameter) in later years?
I have one I know is off an original car and it is about 1/2" in diameter and then I have another one that is about 5/8".

I know many of the lock-out parts are unique to type of trans and the model

However, Do any of the Lock-out linkage and/or brackets interchange between the Automatic and 4-speed trans ?

All Mopar 1970 manual transmission cars have reverse lockout.

Thanks Barry !!!!!

Good morning. If any of you have time, would you mind spending a minute or so explaining the function of the lockout?

I have a '70 Cuda that I just converted to a 4-speed and from what I can gather, the lockout is there to force the driver to park the car in reverse in order to get the key from the ignition.

Am I way off?

As I get the car closer and closer to "stock/factory" I will want to add this linkage eventually but I am not 100% sure I understand the function.

Many thanks!

-Steve

That is exactly it. I Believe it was supposed to deter car thieves by locking the car in reverse. It has the negative effect of leaving your back up lamps burning if you want to listen to your radio with the key in accessory position.

great info as always. to the OE guys, what is the correct plating for the reverse lockout rods? is it the same as the shifter linkage which is more of a grey parkerized look. any info would be greatly appreciated. i had media blasted my originals like a moron without taking pics before. dont want to pay twice at the plater if i guess and find out its wrong.
