I pulled my valve springs out the other day to install the inners (left them out for break-in). The shims (Comp) have wear marks and a ridge from the spring spinning. Is this normal? Are these junk? I have them on top of a locator cup. Did not having the inners in exacerbate the motion when the spring spun and cause it?

Damn really? I asked before I put it together and the consensus was to put them on top of the cup, although I did get mixed answers.

Hopefully you have a big enough step to put them under the cup , whether they locate on the ID or the OD ...

I don't know why shops buy and use "non hardened shims". The black hardened shims cost a little more but that's all I ever use and install unless its buried on the bottom.

The trick when asking questions on Moparts is to know which answer to pay attention to! Most threads have at least one correct answer in them.

They are heat treated, according to comp

When I broke my valve spring last week it broke the outer portion of the locator as well. There was a hardened .060" shim under the locator. It chewed it down to about .030". I do chamfer the edges of my springs as well. All the of the other locators looked perfect for what it's worth.

What do you mean exactly (think I get what you're saying but not sure)

They locate on the OD, and I did not like the way they fit to the port with the shim underneath (running a .060 shim), which is another why the shims went on top. Although the ID of the cup also fits pretty close to the guide...

How do I know they're not going to do the same to the locator cups?

the cups need something to keep them from moving around , they either locate in a step that catches the od of the cup or the valve guide is turned down so they locate on the guide , The id is usually .530 , some viton seals are .500 and hopefully when the guides are sized they didn't go all the way to the bottom.

The cups should be hardened. Here's a silly question , where the cups too big for the springs and/or the shims? The cups should be sized so the springs are held in place on the bottom and the retainers hold them at the top. Other than possible spinning some they shouldn't walk around much, if at all.

Yeah I thought thats what you meant, and yeah, I didn't like the .030 shim under the cup because it sat kind of high against the lip in the port it sits against.

And the spring isn't much smaller than the cup, no, can't move much.

I'm sure comp has a million other cups that wont work for what I need though. They don't know sh1t about what they sell, recommended the wrong shims for my springs so I had to buy more, now they're getting eaten up, what a surprise. Also, have fun trying to get recommended seat and open pressures out of them.

I'm about to just change the springs to the 928s.

I don't rely on the tech line to find out what I need, I talk to Dwayne Porter and ask him what springs, get the measurements and find the cups and shims in the online catalog yourself.
