I have a 2001 Ram 2500 4x4 w/ the Cummins (auto). Currently have a Superchips Flashpaq...adds around 60 hp or so supposedly...all done through the plug under the dash. It runs/drives good, but I'm looking to go to a bigger programmer for a little more power. Truck is stock other than gauges (EGT, trans temp, boost, and fuel press.), 4" straight pipe exhaust, BHAF, and a Raptor 100 lift pump kit. I believe the VP44 was replaced at some point prior also. The transmission was either rebuilt or replaced w/ a reman unit not long before I bought it. Seems to be stock replacement stuff (stock converter) . I realize the stock converter/trans will be an issue on the higher power levels. The truck usually has my 24' enclosed trailer behind it, but I do occasionally use it as a daily driver and even some long trips (unloaded). I'm considering the Edge Comp box. Thoughts?

I would suggest a set of 50 or 75 hp injector nozzles to compliment your super chips programmer. They can be had for less than $150 and hands down the best bang for the buck for sure. They are pretty easy to change and power and mileage will improve. Anything more than that you will need a upgraded TC and turbo. Your HY35 turbo will have trouble keeping EGTs in check with anything more.

IMHO if that superchips programmer put down the advertised hp/torque, you'd be here asking what to do with your trans. My first mod to my 01 was a simple Edge EZ. It wasn't 8K after that towing my 24ft race trailer the torque converter would shudder/slip when locking up. We were racing pretty hard at the time, and being I was busy at work (dealer tech) so we simply slid the trans back and threw another converter at it. We got about 15k out of that one. In the mean time I aquired a spare 47RE and with Dave Goerend's ( http://www.goerend.com/ ) tips and parts I overhauled that using a factory kit, and his valve body kit and torque converter. I have over 100K on that build and don't even think about the trans when I leave town. The Edge EZ doesn't add fuel, but brings the fuel timing in earlier. The Comp unit you're looking at can add fueling depeding on the setting. It pierces a wire at the pump allowing this. The Edge unit is also is a boost fooler, and will come with some info to limit your wastegate. I simply turnbuckled mine. That and my lower stall converter really gets the load moving. Later I added the Bosch RV275 injectors, mentioned above, which was another nice addition to towing. Make sure you run a good set of gauges.

Thanks for the info yall. This superchips programmer has never impressed me. It's definitely better than stock, but I guess just not what I expected. It feels like it blows through the converter and doesn't feel strong until the converter locks up. Once the converter locks, the truck feels like it actually has some power. Guess I'll look into the trans and converter before adding any more power. About the injector nozzles...any problem putting new nozzles/tips on injectors w/ 195k miles? The trucks runs good now. I've never messed w/ injectors on a diesel before.

If you've been in a 727 you can upgrade your 47RE. Like I said, I called Dave a few times and he gave me some guidance and for my mods and towing, not hot rodding. He actually suggested his single disc torque converter for my needs, but I went with his triple disc so it will live with about anything I can throw at it. Other than that it's all stock pieces with the exception of some valve body mods too. With the turbo on our 01 trucks, I've really never been in a situation where I can't control the EGT's, but there again, my EZ would be like a COMP on it's lowest setting. Go higher and as the other poster stated, you may be looking into turbo upgrades. Basically if I can keep the rpms around 2000-2400 pulling some of the steeper grades, things seem to stay around that 1000-1100 range. That may mean dropping out of OD, and utilizing 3/lock up. Pretty much drive the steeps by rpm, not mph. The Comp unit your looking at is a nice unit. On the lowest setting it's like my EZ, just alot more to offer, but my money is on you needing those trans upgrades. Lots of injector options out there, but I stayed on the low end of the power spectrum with the RV275 injectors. I did go with new Bosch units. I've had some not so great experiences with some "ebay" injectors a guy brought me to install at work one time. Lots of ways to attack this..... just sharing personal experieces with my 01

I have ab edge comp in my truck, it stays set on level 5 even when towing. I also have 100hp injectors, which I put in at 209k miles. The 100hp injectors made a huge difference alone. Before them the truck was a dog... but the comp, it made the truck fun to drive. I get better mpg's since I did the mods.

What other modification are on the truck?
Mine are pretty mild. AFE Stage II filter and inlet, Banks Intercooler and intake elbow (the 2005 plastic intercooler blew the crimped ends off of it), Magnaflow 5" exhaust with 5" converter (still has to meet emissions), The previously mentioned Edge Juice "Hot" upgrade, and Superchips DPI. Also, ARP head studs for when I installed the propane, ATS deep trans pan, Mag-Hytec front diff cover and PML rear cover. The rest is stock, stock turbo, pump, injectors, transmission. I really need a better converter and shift kit, been waiting for the trans to need rebuilt, but it has been hanging in pretty good.
