I just removed the steering box on my recently purchased '65 A100 pickup. The bearing cages are toast and i want to rebuild the box. Is this something one should attempt, or best left to the "pros"? I have no qualms about doing it myself, but after attempting to find a rebuild kit, I'm lost. Is there a good place to get such a kit?

Firm Feel in OR. You can probably do it if it's a manual box. Power is a bit more tricky. Have to read up on that and decide.

I want my fair share

I would have a pro do a steering box. Firm Feel did mine.

I don't know how big a town you live in but most good sized places have a steering gear rebuilder.

If you have basic mechanical skills and aptitude a munual box rebuild is not even a two beer job after it's disassembled and cleaned.
A simple task. Replace parts as needed, Set the worm preload during reassembly,
Install the sector, center the box and adjust free play. DONE!!! Most important is worm preload ( a simple thing) and CENTERING the box before adjusting the sector.

the new[october] issue of mopar action has a box rebuild article on page #84. it's an a-body box, but it could give you an idea what's involved.

I rebuilt a manual box years ago with a kit from FF. Had all the bearings and seals.

Truck has a Saginaw 525 box, I got the rebuild kit from the 'bay. Rebuilt it in a parking lot.

Hardest thing was getting all the lube out of the box and all the nooks and crannies.

Pressing in the new bushing for the output shaft was the next hardest.

Firm Feel did mine and it leaked badly..
Went back to them for support and they gave me the sunshine treatment..
Arrogant, terrible customer service..
I woudn't ask them to work on my weedwacker..

Just my $0.02...

Armed with a FSM, they're a walk in the park...

I got bearings from Bearing Service...

Sector shaft seal was tough to find...

(But that was a while ago)...
