beware! I have a customer that bought a set of 8 from a vender & they DO NOT have the correct size hole or thread pitch in these nuts.( also they cost $$$) You will spend all day trying to get one on & be ruining your stud in the process. Luckily I had some originals in stock & it was easy to compare & see the difference. If at all possible USE ORIGINAL STUFF!

1970 - 71 Cuda take a #10 self threading acorn nut for larger ones ( fyi , these were dis-continued thru the manufacturer a few years ago so supply is dwindling )

and an 8-32 machine thread version for the smaller ones ( still readily avail )

What do you mean "the smaller ones" Bill? Are there 2 different size studs on those taillights?

Marker lights not taillights.....The small ones hold the lense in the housing...Bigger ones hold the housing to the sheetmetal{quarter or fender}...
But on a side note some early 70s did get the accorn nuts on the taillights...

Jim,/like mentioned 1970-71 Barracuda ( 1970-71 Fury is the same ) is an odd duck, they require 4 fasteners per sidemarker when most other cars only require 2 per light.

The larger acorn nut is the same as the sidemarkers on most 1969 B and A bodies. ' Also the same nut as on the tail light on 1970 Plymouth B body

AMK was the manufacturer ,but dis-continued a few years back . RT Specialties might have some . I bought the remaining stock AMK had back then and have very few left to use for in house shop projects

Thought I'd dig up this older thread rather than start new.

Large cap nuts -
Mine were in fair shape and best I can tell it appears like the caps were galvanized (clear zinc) and the base was yellow chromate.

Smaller cap nuts -
Again, in fair shape but it appears these were galvanized (clear zinc) on both the top and lower nut assembly.

While it makes little sence to me why two finishes, I'm just looking for confirmation if what I'm seeing is correct?

Thanks

Im really hoping one of you historians can help put this to bed soon as I'd like to plate these tomorrow.

Large - Clear Zinc top, Yellow bottom, or complete yellow?

Small - Complete nut clear zinc? (can't find a hint of yellow anywhere on these)

Thanks for the help

AAR#2,

I've attached a picture of a survivor 1970 Hemi Cuda with 11,000 mi, Hamtramck car. The pal-nut that holds the side marker assembly to the galvanized retainer is zinc-dichromate, and the nut cover that goes over it is clear zinc. The smaller nuts are clear zinc.

I've seen two other survivor cars with the same configuration.

Thanks so much, what a great picture and a great example!!
Often pictures can change color a bit so I’ll ask the question to be sure.

Based on my example I can confirm on the larger nut, the Pal nut was yellow chromate, and believed the cap over it was clear zinc, you agree this appears to be the case. However, looking at the photo it appears to be the entire nut assembly is yellow chromate, but appear to have been plated separately and the reason for the chromate color differences. This is more appearent when comparing the finish color to the smaller nut in the photo, that we agree is clear zinc and a clean silver color.

Additionally it’s great to see that this photo supports that no seal was placed on the bottom. While I had no evidence of a seal or sealer on mine, I do see many selling these with a seal, making me question if what I had was played with over time.

Again, not having seen it in person I’m only asking the question and will rely on you for clarification.

Again, great photo!!!!!

The large pal nut cover definitely is clear zinc. Only the pal nut is zinc-dichromate.

So I decided to post back with additional information on the nuts. Each photo is representative of a complete set of marker acorn nuts for the RH and LH side.
Back - Two large acorns with the large hole and two small acorns with the small hole.
Front - Four large acorns, two large hole and two small hole.
All large acorns with the large hole have a yellow chromate finish Pal nut (mentioned on previous posts), and a clear chromate acorn top.
All other acorns, large with small hole and small with small hole are clear chromate finished Pal nut and acorn top.

Hopefully someone will find this information useful in the future.

Heres how the large nut, large hole two tone acorns turned out, pretty happy overall.
Pay no attention to the wire or bolt (used to wire it up). Once the chromates are dry, those will get tossed.
