I rebuild Allison's. We use safety kleen on the vb,s & wash the internals in a hotsy parts washer which consist of 190* water & soap. Parts come out clean &dry. So I'd say any parts solvent will work just fine.

Been using a petroleum based cleaner for years. Last year I switched to water based cleaner. IF you use heat with it, it works great. Residue has more to do with how clean the cleaner is in my opinion. With water based stuff, you can always take the parts outside and hose them off after washing. Biggest problem with water based cleaner - corrosion. You gotta get right on it with WD 40, etc.

"Parts Washer"

Open tank or closed cabinet?

For a heated cabinet washer you want a detergent that's aluminum safe. For an open tank any traditional solvent will work...I use mineral spirits. (paint thinner)

I also use mineral spirits and a air hose to dry it. No residue to speak of and drys really fast.

There's only one way to clean a converter, cut it open it. So-called converter "flushing" with solvent won't get out the encrusted crud.
