I have a customer with a 97 12 valve, was a 5 speed we converted it to an auto with 48RE guts, eliminated the wavy snap rings and a mild shift kit, billet low stall converter... He has bad knees so he wanted to ditch the manual.

The head gasket started weeping, pulled the head, pitted block and head. So since the motor is tore down to a bare block is there a cam that will make it more responsive? He also wants a new turbo and injectors, we ordered them from summit (60hp injectors and a BD turbo) but they are evidently on perpetual back order, is there something similar with a similar price? Are those even good choices? He just wants it to be more responsive/quicker spooling with a little extra HP.

Be careful with the larger turbo and low stall converter. This sometimes leads to lots of smoke and bad turbo lag. For injectors I'd recommend dynomite diesel. Really liked the ones I had in my old 12 valve I used to have. Hi tech turbo and industrial injection offer some nice turbos that would fit the bill. One other mod if suggest is a set of governor springs for the injection pump to give you some extra rpms that can be useful between shifts. They are cheap and make quite a bit of difference.

Talk to Jacob Kidd at DAP, he beat everyone's prices and was excellent help.
