Unless you drive it with a light foot, a decent V8 is going to put the axles on borrowed time, especially the notoriously weak-kneed Dana 35 rear axle. But then again, if you drive it with a light foot, there's no point in swapping to a V8 in the first place. Bottom line is, the trans, d-shafts, and at minimum the rear axle will need to be replaced. The NP231 transfer case can be kept, although I'd recommend rebuilding it with a wide chain kit, 6 pinion planetary and a SYE kit. These upgrades will beef it up to V8 level specs. I have a Dana 44 rear axle with a new in the box disc brake kit for sale, if you're interested. I was planning on using it for my Wrangler, but in the 11th hour, decided to go with a 1 ton axle.

thanks Dave I was hoping you would reply after seeing your build, what a job but I do have to ask whats the need for a winch on a show poodle? just kidding, what I am looking for is something to pull behind the motor home but with a little more balls than a 4 cyl.
The winch is all part of the disguise of a show poodle masquerading as a actual off-road capable rig. I can make you a nice deal on the Dana 44. Quite frankly, I don't have the room for it, and I'd like to see it go bye-bye.
I haven't bought it yet, just kicking around things. it looks nice in pics I may see if I can get by and take a look at it later today. it has a hard top and A/C. nice paint but I don't like the color but I can change that. anyone swapped a gen3 hemi in one of these? so to put a SB in it I would have to find and auto tranny (don't really want to shift gears)and beef up the transfer cases and rears? would hemi truck set up work?

yep you just need to go with the 4.0 inline 6 really good engine and has plenty of power for what you are wanting to do.

well I went and took a look at the 4cyl, it was pretty clean for the year,no rust. but the motor was tired it had 130K on the clock and had no power. din't smoke or knock but it was clearly down on power. so I gues i'll keep looking and find one with a 6 in it.
They're only 120hp and if sporting anything larger than a stock tire...it really kills what little power it has.....loved mine....but was never in a hurry
