I'm replacing the clutch in my 440 Challenger RT 4spd. It's a clone with a 73 truck block with a cast crank. The flywheel I took off has 3 holes drilled in it. It's deeply cracked. I want to put a new flywheel on it but not sure what to use. Local shop has one but there are different bolt on weights and I have no idea which one I'd use. The damper pulley has a a large weight on it, so I'm assuming it is externally balanced.Thinking of ordering from Summit. Can you guys help me sort this out??

10.5" I assume? Here are a couple options.

Yes, 10.5". If I go with the one requiring counterweights, how do I determine where to put them. Is there some sort of balancing process. Thanks

Actually I got the existing flywheel from Wayne along with all my other 4 speed conversion stuff. It was reconditioned and as I said has 3 holes drilled (I assume for balance). Never had any vibration.

I have a 74 440 "truck" motor cast crank, external balance in one of my toys, so I know flywheel choice is limited, you referenced the large damper, there's 2 basic styles for the 440 cast crank, both are 1 5/8 thick, the 73-75 cast crank has a flat surface where a single timing mark is located, the 76-78 damper has multiple timing marks every 90 degrees plus the timing surface area has a bull nosed taper towards the front, the counter balance ring in front should say "use with 440 cast crank only" they are both basically the same weight...make sure you have the 440 damper and not a 400 damper (1" wide and only ID is a PN#)

I'll assume your currently using the 130 tooth flywheel? if so McLeod PN# 464102 (sometimes ID'd as PN# 464102-17C) it's a steel 30 lbs approx SFI flywheel, it's of the Internal/External design, it is neutral (internal) balance, but is drilled for a bolt on counter weight, you'll need McLeod PN# 564111 counter weight package, 3 weights will be in the kit, but only one will fit the 464102 flywheel, it bolts on the flywheel side facing the engine, the 464102 flywheel has multiple bolt patterns for clutch cover styles and sizes 10", 10.5" and the largest is the 10.95...flywheel and weight kit should run you about $350

Hope this helps

Mike

I see I'm so slow typing, Wayne has already listed the McLeod flywheel I was referencing...price looks good too

Thanx Dayclona. Like I said the refurbished one I had gotten form Wayne didn't have any external weights. Was it balanced by drilling the holes. I never saw any vibration in the engine

Yes the drilled holes are there to balance it for the cast crank. Nice thing about the Mcleod wheel is that if you ever decide to change the engine and go with a neutral balance set-up, you simply remove the bolt on weight.

Plus the McLeod is SFI approved, I'd be more trusting of the McLeod than the factory cast flywheel for safety and the damage the factory flywheel could cause if it lets go...

You can take a nuetral balanced flywheel to a good machine shop for rebalancing, they need to machine the same size holes and depth in the exact places as your are now

This "miracle" part sandwiches between a neutral flywheel and crank ( fits very nice in the recess) and converts a neutral flywheel to cast crank balance -- a new neutral flywheel can be bought for as little as $99
I have used these plates for years on cast crank 400, 440 , and even 360's and they work fantastic for about $50 It is never really cheap to get a machine shop to do what you talked about unless they are already set up and do them on normal basis
This part is a lifesaver that every Mopar guy needs on the wall
Think about using on a test stand --you can run just about any Mopar with a neutral flywheel and this plate--Easy Breezy!!!
