I am wondering if all 70 B bodies regardless of engine or trans had the starter splash shield? Or, was it only used on certain engine & trans combinations? Here is the part I am inquring about:

I presume the same would also be true for 69 B-bodies. Any suggestion as to what to use to replace the asphalt/felt-like material on these shields?

From a 10 Mar 69 engineering print for the 70 B-Bodies.
Note, in the parts number list posted above, the parts manual doesn't mention that it is for only an automatic transmission.

Based on the last post it appears this is for auto trans only. That may explain why my (2) 70 4 speeds do not have it.

If it is for an automatic transmission equipped car only, what is it protecting? It can't be the starter because they both use a starter. Could it be the transmission linkage, cooler lines or some other part on the transmission that is susceptible to impact damage?

The print for the E-Bodies says the same thing, "automatic trans only".

It's always been my understanding that it is auto only 69 and 70.

Good point re: must be protecting something other than starter if used on auto trans only. Any other insight on original purpose for this part?

My '70 Bee's parts stash has one, but it also had other parts from Coronets, etc... so no way would I say my car had one originally... but I am very interested to know for certain. It WAS my understanding that E bodies had them only for auto, not manual... why would a B body be any different?
