Guys,

I'm finally breaking ground on my garage after moving 2 years ago. I left a MADE in the USA big daddy compressor at my old shop. Hated to do it, but had to.

So, for the new shop, what are the better brands out there? What should I stay away from? Options I should get? I will be using it for mostly mechanical work. If I paint any, it will be small items. I would like to be able to run two 3/8" drive ratchets with it at the same time. That will be rare, but nice to have the capacity should I need it. My 2-post lift is electric. So, what size would you recommend? Lastly, what are some prices of said units, so I can budget accordingly.

Thanks!!
Randy

Can't give you a lot of advice but we are looking into a brand called Bel-Aire. I believe, but not 100% sure they are US made. The model we are looking into is a 60 gallon vertical tank that has a 2Hp motor so runs on 110, not 220. This is important as our inverter is only 110 volt. The battery bank is plenty big so no worries there. We are thinking of a second inverter that would give us backup and wired in series could give 220 but I think the 2 Hp will be fine. The reviews I have read several all mention that it is very quiet. 699 at AirCompressorsDirect.com. No personal experience yet but that is what we will likely purchase. We will be using it for some painting of car panels, inflating tires, some small air tools (die grinders) and when we start building the boat at least one air staple gun as cold moulded construction even with a vacuum bag means lots of staples. Actually very similar duty cycle to what you describe it sounds like.
There was a good thread a few months ago about plumbing the system. Our plan is to use copper for the low corrosion and cooling properties.

Dixie....the first question is do you have 220 volts available??? That changes everything.

Low pump speed is where to start - nice and quiet, less water and easy on parts.

I have a 5hp 2-stage-80 gal Champion (USA) and you can stand next to it and have a conversation, it just lugs along.

For me it was a toss up between quincy and champion, I ran both side by side at TP Tools

Don't know if you know any salesmen that sell lifts and garage equipment? That's who I would start with. Then craigs list second.

Like said above, 220 volt and slow(1750) RPMs

I'm a big fan of Speed-Air (Grainger) compressors, I have an earlier version of the one below and it's still running perfectly after 35+ years of pretty hard use. Not cheap.

http://www.grainger.com/product/SPEEDAIRE-Electric-Air-Compressor-4XA59?functionCode=P2IDP2PCP

I believe they still use Champion pumps.

Yes it's what you want in a residential setting. It'll cost a little more up front but then you won't have to deal with a phase converter.

For a constant supply of air when needed your best bet is a two-stage compressor. They supply significantly more air (cfm)than a single stage and cost a bit more but they are worth it. The sellers like to tell you about horsepower but CFM is what's important.

I'm pretty sure he will go 2 stage?

He asked about electrical requirements and usually around residential areas you only have single phase power. And most large compressors come standard with a 3 phase motor because it is cheaper than a single phase motor. If your in commercial area with 3 phase power your best bet to order your equipment for 3 phase power and use it.

This is the brand that I plan on buying to replace my old compressor when it goes out. http://www.quincycompressor.com/products/reciprocatingpiston.html A friend has one in his professional body shop and he loves it. Not a cheap compressor but good ones usually aren't. I would say 5 to 7 hp would be plenty for your use.

I bet Randy will have plenty of power and panel space for anything.

20 years ago I had my 100 amp box taken out of my house and had a 200 amp box installed in the house. Then they put my 100 amp box in my garage. At first it only did one 30 amp 220 plug for a large free gigantic window AC unit. Even the overhead lights feed from the house because that's how it was originally.

Since then I have installed about 10 circuits over the years, 2 50 amp 220 welders plugs, 3 30 amp 220 plugs for pressure washer, hot tub(GFI), and window AC. Then I have a 30 amp 125 volt plug for my RV in the drive and lot's more. Have like 4 20 amp plug circuits. Most of it is to code as I hang out with 2 electricians friends and have done plenty of electrical work in the past at work. Once you have the service anything goes just as long as it's single phase.

This is NEVER my answer when it comes to tools, but... Harbor freight. I bought their 60 gal two stage 220 compressor. It came with a year and a half warranty and is made from a USA can and a euro pump. Assembled in the usa. The same unit is badge engineered as a bel-aire and some other units (same piece, different paint and stickers). The selling points were a slightly lower price, not china made, and it was in stock I paid cash and left with it in my truck.

It easily runs a longboard air sander no problem and kicks on and off while sanding continuously- didn't stay on like a weaker pump. It's not the quietest but not bad at all.

Did this a few years ago myself, here is what I learned..

Not until over 7.5 HP do you have to worry about 3 phase.. If your in a residential neighborhood you probably do not have 3 phase available.

For most apps, single phase is fine..

We are talking REAL 5-7.5 hp here, not the little craftsman type of compressors.. Go look at the big ones, you will see what I mean..

Slow revs is the way to go.. Be advised that most 7.5 HP compressors are just 5hp with different pulleys to spin them faster ( Noisier also)

I purchased an old Saylor Beale and rebuilt it, sure miss it.....

Now that I think more about it, I believe the thread was on Yellow Bullet in the trash or be trashed section so you could try a search there.

My experience has not been so positive, Puked 2 pumps and the control switch in 4 years. had to haggle a bit on the second pump and switch but they finally buckled. They said the units are only rated at a 30-40% Duty cycle if I remember correctly. so do your research. Had I know that I would have chosen a different brand
if you run a blast cabinet that means 3-4 minutes of run time and 7 minutes or so of cool down. And yes it has been serviced regularly. We don't run the unit that hard except when using the blast cabinet occasionally. My 1992 Sears 2 stage never whimpered and never failed in 17 years. Thought I was stepping up with the eaton. ???? next stop QUINCY!!! PERIOD!!!
