The heater core in my 1977 D100 (no A/C) started leaking yesterday, and completely soaked my carpet. Before I attempt to take everything apart to fix the problem, does anyone have any tips for what I need to look out for when I take it apart? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it's the same as my 79 it's the easiest heater core I've done.

while you're waiting, you can cap off the nipples, that supply the core, so you can still drive, while waiting to round up your parts. some of us, in warmer parts of the world, just bypass the heater entirely....

I have a complete firewall that I from a 77 you can come get or practice on. Still has the heater box. Going to scrap soon.

Pretty simple too. Depending on brand, the replacement heater core fills the whole plate. At least on my 72

My 73 the nuts on the engine bay side didnt all come off. So I had to chnge it with the heater box installed. Far right side will have a couple screws that can only be removed if the box is. I broke it off. Didnt cause any real damage and went back together just fine.

Ah. My 72 I was able to swap cores with it installed. Took every little screw out. I don't remember having to break any screws though Also replaced the foam while I was at it

I did mine that way too with my 79 and I had no problem getting all the screws out without breaking anything.
My new heater core was almost the size of the plate too and a couple of the screw holes didn't line up so I had to cut them a bit.

My new heater core was the same way. Plate was bigger but still fit fine and had to massage a couple of the mounting holes.

Thank you everyone for all of the advice. Unfortunately work is really busy right now ant the truck is just sitting in the garage. Bypassing the heater all together was my first thought, and probably will still do that for the short term. Hopefully I will be able to fix this by the end of next month.

magnum440d100 Thanks for the offer, I am tempted to take you up on it, but would not be able to get out there for a few weeks.

I finally had time to remove the heater core. Attached is a picture of the heater vent door.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for the foam that covers this to seal the air out, or an idea for a replacement? As it is now it
crumbles to the touch.

Thanks

When I did mine I scraped off the loose stuff and just put some thin wide foam tape around the perimeter of it.

hit up google, and look at open cell foam tapes, as mentioned by 5th. big box stores might have a selection as well, just remember open cells, not closed.

Thanks for the ideas. I am also talking with Jim from Detroit Muscle Technologies. He is in the process of making a complete set of gaskets for these heater boxes.
