My 727 dipstick tube leaks all the time. I think this has been covered here before, but what is the best way to seal the tube to the case? I have the engine out right now, so access is good. Thanks!

It has a new O-ring with some RTV.......still drips. I know there is ATF RTV. Is there a different approach to this?

The aftermarket locking dipsticks with a hefty seal (non o-ring) are pretty nice.

I removed my dipstick tube & put on a new O ring & resealed it with rtv & still leaked until I dropped the pan & took off the tube again & cleaned up the recess where the tube fits with brake clean & same with the end of the tube, regooped it again(with permatex #2 my fav) & no leak after that. If it's not clean & dry the ATF just wicks around whatever kind of gasket sealer you use & leaks again. good excuse to ch the fluid/filter & adj the band

I would be looking at the tube real close to see if it is bent or cracked at the groove also check and make sure that the tube is going in the case deep enough.
We install tubes at work on a daily basis with NO sealer and rarely ever have one leak if all is in good shape

If the tube is clean and crack free + the bore in the case is good, It shouldn't leak

About 15 years I ago I cut the end off my 727 dipstick and brazed on the end to a GM dipstick tube and used their seal. Even with the dipstick unsupported it wouldn't leak. Later Dodge started using this style seal in their truck transmissions (early/mid 90's)

The boot style does work better but if everything is in good shape an oring works just fine.

Sounds like I need to spend some quality time with my tube and O-ring. Thank you!

Take a real close look at the groove where the o-ring sits. On rare occasions the tube will crack in that area and cause leaks. Other than that, a good clean hole and tube with a fresh o-ring should seal by itself, of a smear of silicon or Right Stuff won't hurt.

Do you know for sure you have the proper O-ring? I once tried to re-ring my tube with one out of an assortment that was about the right size, wouldnt seal.

Went to a tranny shop and the guy said it takes an O-ring just the right size. A few thousandths goes a long way. Gave me one and problem went away.

When I put this engine in, I bought a custom tube from Gennie Shifter. The tube was always hard to get at. When installed, I cleaned the tranny area, installed with the o-ring and rtv blue sealant. I'd heard from many sources on leaks in this area. Mounted the top of the flexable stainless wrapped tube to firewall. No leaks, looks good and easier to check fluid. A little spendy but to me it was worth it.

is the O ring square or a regular round one. A new round one(not from a trans shop though) leaked until I pulled the pan in my post but I remember thinking that the OD should have been larger.
