Has anyone upgraded their headlights using relays? I'm thinking of upgrading my HLs to halogen and I know relays are the way to go. I was looking at the MAD kit. Anyone use this?
Yes I did it a couple years ago, didn't use a kit. I just used what I had already. I used 3 2 for my headlites and one for my AC clutch. I did not upgrade my headlites, I think halogens have been in them for years?
I have already by passed my alt gauge and have a #10 wire running from the alt to the starter relay years earlier. Plus the big red wire burned up many years ago also going through the bulkhead connector and that has been replaced with solid wire going through the bulkhead. So I think I addressed all the weak links?
When I got done my headlites still dimmed at low idle! So then I replaced my stock alternator with 100 amp Powermaster and now I'm good at idle. My old alt was toast at idle, I'm pretty sure there was something wrong with it, even though it made good power after the RPMs went up.

OT I'm sure Halogens are brighter but are they more efficient? to where they draw the same or less current than the old syle sealed beams

Halogens draw less amps. The ones that take a H4 insert are even better.Ran them in my 57 and in the 65 and 62 along with my 58 Harley.Rocky

The mad kit is OK. My thought seeing as I build relay kits for headlight set ups, why put 16 or 18 ga wire in the system. Crimp connections add more resistance to the system. I run only 12 or 14 gauge wire for power supply to headlights, all home runs with no crimp or solder connections except for the fuses installed in the power supply side.
I'm not a big fan of pulling power from a junction point, especially on Chrysler cars. Straight off the alternator stud and fuse each circuit separately, high and low beam. Redundancy is a good thing here. If the fuse pops on low, you still have a high beam circuit to switch on and get stopped. Fusible links in a headlight set up? That's not easy to replace in the middle of the night!
What brand relays are being sold? I use/sell only tyco/bosch. Never any chinese relays.
For a little more money, 2 x 24 from mad, you can get a kit that has all the items you need along with new ceramic bulb sockets and tyco/bosch relays. Or have one built that is plug and play, no wire cutting using the existing headlight system to trigger the relay set up.
A good halogen headlight that is really inexpensive is the GE nighthawk 6024nh IIRC.

I always have to rebuild the front harnesses, so I build the relays right in. Don't know about the MAD kit

Stock. Look under the hood of the newer cars, all different types. Have to rewire where you want things to go, but not bad. Made a poker thingy to release the clips on the terminals from an old tape measure blade (or you can buy them semi cheap).

I went simple and mounted the relays directly and spliced (soldered) into the headlight wiring. Simple, clean and only cost $10
That is the way to do it. Nice job. And yes, halogens draw a lot less power than the old tungsten headlamps the cars came with. Relays lower the current draw through the tired headlight switches the cars cam with hopefully stretching their lifespan. Craig

I upgraded the headlights on my son's '69 Dart using relays and halogen lamps and I couldn't believe how much brighter and whiter they were! I'm definitely going to do the same upgrade on my own Dart. I have halogen lamps but running through the original harness and they are nowhere near as bright. So, I know it is the relays that made the difference. I attached a picture of the relay setup while it was on the bench being worked on. That nifty relay bracket it black anodized aluminum, and I got it for $9.95 with the hardware from: http://www.tentalentsenterprises.com/relay-mounting-bracket-basic-bracket-p-35.html
