What is the correct fluid capacity for the Dana 60 in my race car? I am confused by what the service manual says.

On another note, do some of the Mopar rears use different capacity based on whether it is an open or suregrip diff?

Larry Shepard suggested, as did Mopar at that time, to use 1 quart of lube in both the 8 3/4 and the Dana 60 at the old Mopar drag seminars.(drag racing only) That was in 1974 and again several years later at another drag seminar held in Long Beach,CA before Mopar went bankrupt the first time. I put 5.5 pints now(this winter)in my Dana 60 with a 40 spline spoool and axles with one of the aluminum rear stud girdle covers because that is what was in when I bought that car, it wasn't broken with 5.86 Pro gears so I didn't change that fluid level Your choice, I ran 1 quart for many years in both my Dana 60 with a posi and 8 3/4 with spools, no gear failures do to lack of lubrication Your choice

I was told buy a very knowledgeable Dana 60 guru to run enough fluid in it to make sure the carrier bearings are being oiled. That means the oil level should be slightly higher than the bottom of the bearings setting still.

Fooled around with fluid levels and never seen enough of a ET difference to make it worth taking a chance.

Thanks for all the responses. I put 5 pints in it - that's what came out. I couldn't bring myself to running less..............
