My original direct drive starter is dragging when the car (67 426 GTX) is hot. I want to remove it and have it rebuilt. I was able to access the lower nut but, I cannot get at the upper bolt and the corresponding nut.

If anyone has experience doing this when the engine is in the car, I would appreciate the advice. I'd also like to know what tools you used.

And, given that access is so limited, how did you reinstall the upper bolt and its nut?

Thanks.

I've stuck my arm through the rear access hole in the left apron and wrestled it that way due to my headers. Sometimes on other cars a long extension/short socket arrangement works from the front. I also have a specific box-end wrench with an arched/bowed design that works.
From the rear, due to headers & Lakewood bell, I have an allen-head bolt that allows access with a long extension.
Mine is a '68 Hemi RR. I hate that DD starter!
