Check the reluctor to pickup gap with a brass feeler gauge. It should be .007-.008" Many times this clearance is too great and causes erractic timing.

The MP dist I've had I bring into a shop and have them put it on their distributor table.Best $50.00 I've spent on performance upgrades.

Could it be a worn Tchain or needing a collar on the end of the dist shaft to stop the play of the tang in the slot in the top of the intermediate shaft. I addressed both of those issues & my timing is now rock steady at any rpm with a high mileage stock dist.

When checking recently my brand new MP dist what I got is the reluctor points WEREN'T same height everyone,so I had to mill down one by one and measuring every point against pick up coil to get 007-009 average gap AND ALSO COMPAIRING WITH VACUUM IN to check for sure if pick up ratio against center is the right one and keep the same gap... DID NEED IN FACT TO BEND A LITTLE BIT THE PICK UP coil assembly

I have to admit built quality is not good as the price you pay for it, but I won't tell is the distribuitor really, like some of its parts what are not more than standart stock parts not specific PERFORMANCE parts.( pickup and reluctor ).

I would check also for play on drive gear slot AND conditions of bushing on block. You can have worn pieces there too... I'm having a similar problem ( +/- 2 degrees jump ) and will check that

Nacho thanks for the reminder, you had brought this up before & I noted it at the time & then spaced it. You cannot assume that anything is right without checking it out thoroughly

The instructions on a new one tell you to make sure you check the pick-up gap.

If it is a used one, the springs could have been played with and need to be replaced.

I did a fresh build, new chain, gear, bushing etc. timing still moved all over. Put a collar on the shaft and it's rock solid through the rpm range! Couple bucks at the local hardware store, Cheap easy fix!!

remember check also with vacuum working, not just on rest position... will notice the pick up won't keep the gap, because base movement is not according with center. Doesn't keep same ratio distance.

If you don't get same or close gap and need to bend the pick up, willneed to check again on rest position and will notice HOW DIFFERENT location will get. Is a job that needs patiente ifyou really care about precision!!!

thats the moement you think should have to get an MSD distributor ( but will pay more than double for the vacuum one ).

The real deal/problem is that USA companies needs to take care about what is being made/sold under its USA brand names

Recently got a new STANDARD NSS ... yeah, made in CHINA, and pins simply jumped out from switch. So wegot noticeabily NOT ANYMORE STANDARD control quality on its own parts. ( and I won't talk about the brushed badly machined finish on switch hex heads )

BTW... I also milled down the PICK UP POINT END ITSELF
