Remind me again, Red paint goes on:
- 69 and 70 cars?
- ralley and road wheel cars only?
- only on power disc brake cars (so rear drums only)?
- E and B Body?

I had seen a Chrysler Engineering Drawing showing the paint location. Who can post a copy?

Thanks

.......And, they were brush painted, sloppy. Paint was still wet when wheels were installed.

I can attest to the fact that they did NOT adhere to the 2" instruction that well. Our 69 GTX had red paint on the studs, all the way up to the snout of the hub and even on the bearing cap.

Great information.

Were Manual(11") brake cars also painted?

Never seen painted calipers. Not on any original equipment. Have never seen any engineering drawings that specify red being included on calipers either. Will be interesting to see what gets posted regarding this subject.

We have found a few with green paint marks across the hub and dust cover that lead us to believe they were done by inspectors.

These are from a 1971 Duster 340, September 1970 SPD, Los Angeles plant. Notice how random the coverage was even on the same car. The paint ran and dried in one position so the cars must have been parked for some period of time shortly after the wheels were installed.

My 73 Coronet wagon has the original drums on the rear, and there were remnants of really old red paint on the drums.

The only time I have seen painted calipers is on cars in Chrysler sales/promotional videos. Have not seen any on actual cars in 30+ years in this hobby.

Complete video can be seen here; calipers are at the 8:33 mark.

Yes Alan, I've seen this video as well as pics over the decades of the promotional/pre production pics showing painted calipers, I thought I had a factory drawing/print showing painted calipers but I haven't located it yet (then again I have a few thousand to look though!)...there's lots of factory prints that clearly show ideas or changes that never made it past the drawing board or died in pre production, I would think painting calipers on line probably turned out to be a bad idea after seeing how slopply the drums were done, I could see line inspectors having concern for calipers/pads/rotors caked with paint causing problems

I did post a factory caliper print on Moparts a long while ago that mentioned a red/Orange caliper on IIRC a HD/performance application in place of the "standard" caliper...I'll be dammed if I can locate it on my puter

I think it would look really weird to have a car with disc brakes have the rear drums painted red while the front having no red at all. Almost seem like it would be out of place.

Think how goofy it would look to only have a six inch blob of red if they did paint the front disc brake caliper.
Not painted is correct. Remember they painted them not for looks but for rust protection.

Uhhh....the red paint was intended only for styled wheels only, rust protection was not on the "list" of things this step was to accomplish, it was intended to accent the drum thru the "spoke/cut out" sections of the wheels

With all due respect, do you have a list of what the factory wanted to accomplish by painting these styled wheels? I really want to advance my knowledge on this with any factory issued guidelines. Please post them for all of us. Thanks

The reason I said what I did was I talked to a factory line worker about 15 years ago before he died, and he said they were painted so that the drum would not rust where it was exposed by the styled wheels. It really doesn't matter why, my point was just that they did it on drums only with styled wheels and not on discs.

And yet I guess the area where the caliper showed through the window on the road wheels was acceptable if that rusted.

With all due respect a factory line worker wouldn't have a clue why they designers and engineers decided to do this.

This was not a Mopar invention. They were simply copying a fad that was popular. Hot rodders were doing it for years simply because they liked how it looked.

I agree with Dayclona on this one.

I actually went to the trouble of painting the drums and calipers on my GTX when I converted to disc brakes. Much to my disgust, the caliper is pretty much invisible with the 15" Rallye wheels.

This was not a Mopar invention. They were simply copying a fad that was popular. Hot rodders were doing it for years simply because they liked how it looked.

I agree with Dayclona on this one.

Assuming this was because of a fad, this must mean that only cars with styled-wheels received red brake drums?

So, your normal taxi or family car, i.e., a Coronet 4-door with steel wheels, didn't have red brake drums?

When did Chrysler stop using the red paint?

Were any painted green from factory? My car has what looks like f6 green on the faces....

We have found a few with green paint marks across the hub and dust cover that lead us to believe they were done by inspectors.

Anyone with a better pic of the inspection mark?

Thanks for the pic. Almost looks like a lime green?

We found it to match a standard green enamel from Tractor Supply. And now I have to pop the dog dishes for it to seen at a show! We even mimicked the copper plating on the left hand wheel studs. I really need a therapist.

I think Ford red and Chrysler red engine paint are highly similar. I know these are just pics, but they appear the same.

Ford Red

Chrysler Red

Some market the same color as both Ford and Chrysler red.
