I'm looking for info on big block options for my 66 Sport Fury auto. At first, I researched some easy(er) upgrades on the 318 such as a intake, 4bbl, cam, headers etc. Pricy. I think I can find a drop in motor for the costs of those things. I have a buddy with a 71 413 in a Winnebago that runs, so I thought that an option. Someone said a 383 or 400 would be the best options, as a 413 is going to be a lot of work to get to fit, i.e. water pump, oil pan, exhaust, other parts that dont fit, etc. Id like to find something to change out motor mounts, radiator and drop right in with minimal issues. all opinions and recommendations appreciated.

I don't think you'll have any problem getting an RB type (413, 426, 440) into a C-body....those engine compartments are huge.

It'd be where I went first. The Poly 318, while I love it, is not easy to hop up.

There's no replacement for displacement. BUT, a 413 is just 5 cubic inches bigger than a stroker 360, a 408. Now a stroker 413 can be anything from 472 cubic inches on up.

Choices, choices!

as long as the 413 is not a 8 bolt crank HD truck engine with its own specific WP/housing/exhaust manifolds...it may be a drop in with a BB727.

some of those 413s are same as a car 413 that can be made right into a 426 wedge engine.

ID what your buddy has for sure before you decide to pass on it.

I am going to get the one I found..every one said it was the HD truck 413...NOT! 250$ and coming home with me.

If the 413 is in good shape & likely the price is right I'd jump on it. The pan/pickup/water pump housings are an easy change as needed & cheap. I would swap the manifolds to 68-70 HP items. in that big boat you need torque (cubes) & the 413 will get you up & running fast(er)/cheaper so you can cruise this summer whiel you build a stroker 440

The 413 can be a torquey little guy but don't plan on rebuilding it in the future unless you enjoy spending money. The pistons are unobtanium and must be custom made in most cases.

Have you thought about stroking the poly? There's quite a bit of info out there on that. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/howto/mopp_0110_how_to_give_a_318_poly_engine_more_power/ is one such article.

I don't want to get too deep into the guts on anything I buy, including the 318 that's in it. Id like to pull the 318 & Tranny and would like something I can drop into place w/ mount and radiotor changes. The motor and tranny are still in the Winnebago, so no idea on the crank. Just wanting a good big block that I can do some stuff to on the top end as I go along.

A '71 413 shortblock should drop right in, you may have to scrounge passengercar heads, manifolds, waterpump asembly, etc. Or maybe not. It's a Mopar, never say never.

There are still tons of RB motors out there in motorhomes. The only problem is you usuallyhave to take the whole MH, or else the guy thinks the engine is something special. But your deal sounds like a winner. Go for it.

Some MHs had a parking brake mounted on the transmission tail shaft. If so, a donor trans will need to be found.

You know, that's true. But the MH 727 is a keeper, you have to change the output shaft and tailhousing. The one that's in the car right now may work, John Kunkel will know.....

I appreciate all the help. Thats good info to know. I have a different friend that has a ton of Bb parts, and motors, but all need rebuilt, mainly 383 stuff. A lot of the stuff would interchange (waterpump, oil pan etc) w the 413 wouldnt it?
Also, to clarify,if the 413 tranny has the ebrake mount, and other shaft, it can be swapped out?

Yes just get the pump housing with the inlet on the same side that your rad lower nipple is on & I believe there are several variaties of "center sump" big block pans & you need the specific pickup to match that particular pan (double R can help you with that)

I have owned many 413 s and some were motor home engines , some truck engines and standard car engines . I believe they may have had different cams and heads as the truck engines could not rev like the car engines but could lug for ever.
save the cam gears on the truck engine as there is no timing chain but not sure if the cam gear will go into a standard housing.
A friends dad had one of those old dodge motorhomes circa 66 all fiberglass and no corners. It had badge on the side about 4' sq. that said 413 Super High performance.
So I pulled the engine cover and saw the biggest set of manifolds I have ever seen . It had a monster Holley carb on it too.
You grab the RB and there are lots of B and RB parts that will fit .
Good Luck with it .

A truck or RV engine is adding complications for no reason, the exhaust may or may not work the oilpan, and pickup will need to be swapped out with the correct c-body pan, the waterpump is likely to be a passenger side inlet which causes radiator fitment difficulties.

There are bunches of 66-73 c-bodies with running 383's and 440's that can be had for 800 to 1600 and you will have all the parts, engine, trans, plus lots of clips and hardware and other parts that were used trough the years on these cars , And with the right parts car you can get the brake system out for yourself or sell to others wanting to upgrade brakes.

Well, it sounds like the 413 idea is going to be more trouble than its worth. I may buy the thing and pull the motor and tranny anyway, as it sounds like its worth something. Looking for 400,383,440,what ramifications do the body types a, b, c mean in terms of motor mount/tranny drop in on my 66? What about model year?
Thanks for the help.

Any 66-73 Big block B or C body the engine and trans and radiator will be a easy swap into your 66 Fury. Its not likely to find a B-Body big block car without paying a premium.

Look for 66-73 C body 4 door or wagon as a donor

get it as complete and running if possible, it will save you time and money in the long run, My brother and I have bought 4 over the past year and we are in So. Florida which is limited in square miles of where these cars are.

look here for cars and parts as well as the local craigslist.

i been reading your posts over the last week or so (welcome aboard byt the way ) and i don't see or remember what you budget for this project is. i'm gonna guess and say you're like most of us and say it's not alot of $$. that said i'm gonna pony up with the 383-400 engine group. easy to find, make decent street power on a lowish budget and should pop right in.

dont rule out the MH RB engines. my 78 lopo 440 from a MH and 78,000 miles on it really woke up my 88 swb truck.

shave 40 foot of MH, add a RPM intake/q-jet/duels/3.91sg and it is a killer street cruzer.

the 413 I am looking to get has wedge heads and looks just like a car engine, even has headers on it (not the big truck manifolds specific to HD/IND-413s)

not sure what wedge heads but looks about like my MH 440 does.

my trans was a short shaft bolt on yoke, bolted right in the stock location but I had to build a drive shaft with a slip yoke.

Okay, weve been talking about the mh 413. A couple of new options have come up:
1. a 440 from a mh. Does this pose the same problems as the mh 413?
2. A mid to late '70s stock 400 from a cordoba. Its in a Coronet. He wants to keep the pulleys, and distributor. Is this later model 400 a decent option?
Thanks for the input!

MH 440 is a good one and would only need a pick up/pan swap and car exhaust manifolds/headers

same for the 413 if it is not a HD/truck 413

the 400 would be a drop in if it is in a car now as far as oil pan goes.

would need correct brackets pullys for it and the B engine dist which is shorter than a 413/4440 RB engine.

deff ez to R&R it from a car rather than a MH for sure hands down.

the 400 is sounding to be ez-est/cheapest swap to a BB engine though as it is already in a car.

brackets/pullys should not be hard to scratch up either.

I didn't mention I have another 318 poly and 727 sitting in my shop. I am ignorant to machine work and performance motor building. Would the wide block 318 poly bored .90 be similar to a big block? What is the cost of something like this? It would allow me to tear down the donor, have it built, and drop it in with no new tranny, changing pans, radiator, etc.

You need to find someone in your area that knows Mopars and understands your financial situation to not get you in over your head.

The motorhome engine only a good base if you are going to do a lot of mods and changes (read Money spending) if you are looking to do a performance upgrade with out a lot of money spent you need to do a simple swap with a complete car that has the engine combo (combo means 95% of all the pieces to make it work)

look for a rusty beat to crap car that has a drivetrain to use. If you look for them they are all over.

The MH engines are so hit and miss there is no telling what you'll get. Some only need an oil pan and pickup tube. Others need rebuilds.

He would do well to have someone familar with B/RB engines take a look at the stuff available to him.

It seems like the C-body cars, such as the 66 Fury, require a C body oil pan. I think these pans have a notch in the side of the pan to clear the steering linkage. Big block C-body pans are fairly common.

Post some pics of the MH 413. Also tell us the budget and what you are trying to accomplish.

For reference, when people talk about the industrial 413 this is what they have in mind:

Notice the water pump is really high on the engine? The water pump itself is a larger diameter than a passenger car pump and the housing has bosses that flow water directly into the heads.

That might help the OP understand what to look for.

Im just north of Nevada MO. As far as budget, i really havent set a limit, but i dont want to get crazy. If i can find a matched bb and 727 id like to give under 700. That would leave me some room for perf parts. I have a 400 found but no tranny for 400 but he needs to keep the pullys and distrib. I have a 383 with 727 found from a 67 newport but dont have answer on price yet.

I vote for the 383 out of the NewPort!
Here is my '67 Satellite I just pulled out the small block and installed the 383 727 out of a '68 NewPort my self last month.

Has an aluminum intake and a untuned Edelbrock carb. other than that, Yes it is stock

the swap was eazy peazy. used the radiator and and a few other items. if you wait to find the right car you can get power disk brakes for your 66 as well.
