My 68` B-body has a steering issue.
When changing lanes on the hi-way it either resists leaving your lane OR once it gets over the crown aggressively contiues to go left/right.

Cannot find anything worn,,wheel bearings/b-joints/tie-rods/box/idler/steering arm.
Front end has been rebuilt/don`t know when,At 70,000 mile now.
Tires new radials, alignment 1/8th toe in.

Only thing left is control arm bushings.
Its nice and clean and I can`t see anything off-center or evidence of any movement.........

Only thing that helps is LOWER tire pressure.Drives better, but still not as good as I think it can be. I had a GTX with the exact tire/wheel combo etc... Drove WAY better.
Drives better @ 30lbs versus 38lbs.P-195/75/R15s
Why not just run less air??? MUCH harder to steer, manual steering.

Any experiences? Other ideas?

Worn pivot shaft bushing would change the camber in my car like crazy while driving. Its worth checking out.

Control arm bushings are very important as are the brake reaction strut bushings. If the strut bushings are worn it will be impossible to maintain proper toe in. My personal preference is to use poly bushings in the UCA's and rubber [ Moog ] in the lowers. I also prefer the Moog problem solver bushings for the strut rods. I assume you have stock offset wheels. If not and you have wheels with negative offset this will increase the scrub radius which will increase the feedback in the steering wheel from road irregularities.

I'd get alternate transportation/get it up on stands/tear it down till you find exactly WHAT is worn. It ain't going to get any better till you bite the bullet & dig in & 30 lbs ain't the answer. You'll see it (the problem) when you see it

Yep...

I'd get it on a front-end rack where you can eliminate the head scratching...

I got all urethane up front on a '71 Ply...

It rode the ruts pretty hard with 255-60's up front...

Manual steering...

Good stretch of pavement-smooth as glass...

I had a duster years ago that acted just like that, tore it apart and found that the K frame was broken where the LCA pivot shaft bolts on

What are the other specs of the alignment?

Worn or loose wheelbearings can do funny things aswell. Check them.

That's a little high , usually max is 35 , high pressure is ok on the track , but less tire contact on the road may make it follow ruts easier ?

70k miles on rebuild , they don't make rubber like they used to , I'd be tearing into it and replacing bushings .

I usualy run 34/35. Thats just something I noticed.
70,000 on the car, front end parts 3-5,000 estimate. Front end was probably rebuilt when he built the car and put in the 383,,was /6.

Well today a found A problem ,probably not THE problem????? .
The output shaft on the steering box is loose.
Adjusting makes no improvement.
With one wheel off the ground I get as much free-play as a bad tie-rod. All in the box.
You can`t feel it in the steering wheel, only by working the wheel/spindle by hand.

So whats the prefered new box for a street/strip cruiser? Manual steering....

That is probably most of your problem, if the tire is moving that much and the steeringwheel is not then it's doing the same thing while driving and causing the car to dart with the road contours.

Firm feel stuff is a 3 week plus wait.
Summit has a Flaming River box in stock.
Except for any pricing difference is FlamingRiver box a decent piece?
Strictly cruising and strip use no corner carving.

This will happen after running the car awhile with worn out LCA bushings. The stresses of the road are no longer cushioned by the bushing and the metal to metal vibration rattles the K member/pivot shaft hole apart.

Does the car still have all the slant suspension parts (small torsion bars, no sway bar)?

Not sure on the torsion bars, never measured them.
It carries a 440 with a roots blower etc... no problem,so they are V-8 bars i believe.
Its has a sway-bar and the correct K-member too.

Slant bars will carry the weight, but not well around corners...
