I've been going through the wiring on my '73 Satellite, thought I had it good (except the wipers!), but when turning the steering wheel causes it causes the horn to beep in certain places.

What's going on here, Mopar guys??

That's gotta be embarrassing!. Take off your horn ring or what ever you have there & look at the wiring at the top of the steering wheel where it gets grounded by the horn button & see what's catching & making it ground as you turn the wheel.

It’s likely a mechanical problem and not electrical. What I mean is the horn button itself id the cause and not the wiring. Not sure what this looks like on your car but on nine the center of the wheel is the button and pressing the button down completes the circuit between the wheel and the column. Sounds like you have some high points on this mechanism so when you turn the wheel you are completing the circuit at certain points without actually pressing the button.

Hmmm... I'll have to check it that.

My steering wheel looks like this:

Any tips on taking it apart without destroying anything? There appears to be two places I could remove things, the pad between the three buttons, and the whole center that has the buttons on it?

that jogged my memory, that the whole wheel needs to come off to get at the copper circular ring where the black wire is grounded to sound the horn & see what's hanging up in there. Look on the back side of the wheel for any screws to undo the black cover pieces in the pic so you can get at the big nut.

I fixed this very problem on my '73 Road Runner this past weekend. The snap ring on the colum bearing at the turn signal was lose as it had not seated properly, this allowed the spring at the lower end of the colum to pull the shaft down just a little. I think the lock wheel was occasionally was rubbing the housing thus grounding the shaft which caused the horn to beeb when I turned the steering wheel. Good luck and be sure to let us know what you find. By the way the steering is much smoother now.

Well, it stopped the random honking, but I'm not really sure the culprit.

I got the little horn pad off, and removed the nut that holds the steering wheel on.

I thought I'd try "He-Man"ing the steering wheel off the splines, and I pulled and pulled, seemed to give a little bit, then I heard a noise.

A small noise, a tiny *pop* almost, if the radio had been cranked, I might have missed it.

Now the horn doesn't sound when the wheel is turned, but still works correctly when the button(s) are pushed.

Should I stop while I'm ahead, wait for the symptom to come back, or keep going looking for what the problem may have been?

What exactly did I do by pulling on the steering wheel?

I'm not sure what you did? Will the shaft move up and down? I would be sure to check the small snap ring on top of the bearing. The shaft should have a spring on it visable under the hood that pulls down on the shaft. You should be right at the snap ring if the steering wheel is off. You may have to clean it up to find it if it is greasy it is on the shaft and has 2 small holes to remove it with snap ring pliars. My snap ring had poped out of the groove and allowed the shaft to slide down about an 1/8 of an inch.
