Hey guys, what I want to do is ditch the cat converter, then run 2.5" back from the factory Y pipe. Do a 1 in/2 out muffler, and put the tips out behind the rear tires. I told this to the exhaust shop but they said they have to leave the Cat Converter. Is that true on a 25 year old truck? It will be registered in FL like the rest of my cars, so no emissions checks or state inspections but he said that doesn't matter.

So I was just wondering if the option to remove it is there, or do I have to leave it like he says.

If so, can I have him make sure that it's placed in a section of straight pipe, then just remove it myself and clamp some straight pipe in that section.

Man I wish I had some who could teach me to weld.

A repair shop can not remove any emissions equipment but you as the owner can do what ever you want.

What if I removed it, then took it in to have them repair the damaged section by welding in straight pipe?

As I see it it's just another perk of living in Florida.

They may not touch it if you remove it. They may even say they must put a cat back in.

One of the best things you can do for yourself in this hobby is to learn to weld. 50 years ago, most high schools had metal shops & wood shops. That is where I first learned. Two years back the local Vo Tech School was offering a Saturday class called "Welding For Gearheads" and I signed up for a refresher course. It was great!! I cleaned up some bad habits that I had acquired, refreshed my skills in OxyAcetylene, Arc welding and got to learn MIG welding and TIG in steel and aluminum. The school had all the latest equipment and the instructor was a master. There has to be a school like that in your area. Go for it

I would buy a mid pipe for an 85 1 ton with a 360. Look at the Walker exhaust web site. They have pictures of all parts. No need to weld this on... it just clamps in place like the original.

I know that fed law would not let you remove them.It used to be up to a 10K fine and 6 months in jail.Feds were heavy into prosecution years ago.The shops that I worked at would not touch a system if the convertor wasnt there. The feds back in the 80s and 90s actually sent people out to see if shops would eliminate them. They used to sell what was called a "Test Pipe".It was supposed to replace the convertor to see if it was clogged.Everyone knew they were just used to eliminate them. You dont want to know how many of my trucks didnt have a convertor. But I did mine myself.Rocky

I've looked and can't find it on the site. Maybe it's just me. I would definitely like to find this part if it'll let me bolt it in myself.

I think this going to be what I go with. It would be more expensive and a bigger hassle for me to have the shop do the system for me. Using the system in the link, I can keep my stock tank because of the routing like you guys mentioned earlier, get rid of my cat converter, have mandrel bends instead of compression bends used by local shops, and I can do it myself in my garage. Did I mention this cheaper than the shop?

You can actually go to Rockauto.com look up a 1 ton exhaust and click More info on the part and it will pull uo the whole exhaust diagram. some parts are no longer available like the part that would delete the Cat. I tried to get it. I have the 1Ton 2.5" Y-pipe and 3" tailpipe in my 75 D100

The walker part number is 45951. I have not bought this part in a few years but a quick search on google had many to choose from. Jegs $44.99, Summit $39.97, And Rock auto said in was stocked in an outlying warehouse and would ship in one day $40.79.

Thanks guys but I'll probably go with the bolt in/clamp dual exhaust setup with mandrel bends.

In another thread it was recommended to do the dual setup, but it could be a pain because of location of the tank. Not to mention they wanted $700 to bend up the 2.5" dual exhaust, with H pipe and flow master's that are on my sig car. And that's with compression bends. Couldn't see spending the again.

So then I decided to just do a single exhaust into a 1 in/2 out muffler for the dual tips dumping behind the rear wheels. But the exhaust shop is saying they had to leave the Cat on there, which is why I was looking for this intermediate pipe. I would install it after they did everything else.

But if I can get this true dual kit for $220 and install it myself, I prefer that route. It'll be mandrel bends instead of compression, and it lets me dump the cat without hassle and have a true dual. Maybe after I have it in I will go somewhere and have them put in a cross/h pipe. But I'll make sure and store away the part number for that intermediate pipe in case I end up having to go that direction.

Go back type in your Zip code and refresh it this is what pops up

No, I didn't call to verify that intermediate pipe. If it makes a difference the part number I looked was 45951, in the LMC catalog

just have the muff shop make you the replacement piece and bolt it on yourself.. the truck does not even have to go down there..just print out the pic in the link showing the complete system.

provide them custom size/measurements after you have a chance to have a look under there with a tape measure.

they can make one right up faily cheap I would think.. offer 40-50 bux...about the same if you buy/ship it...ifin you could get one..

The 1 for the 4xs has bends in it to get around the T case. It will work on a 2x..

Scratchin: I planned on having everything after the y pipe be new 2.5 single pipe, then the 1in/2out muffler for dual tips. Even with me doing the cat delete at home, if they are wanting anywhere near $200 to do their part of the exhaust, Im just going to spring for the bolt in true dual kit and do it myself. And judging by their past prices they will be charging at least that.

76dodgeboy: I saw that you responed to someone else, just wanted to let you know that I had not actually verified that they have it in stock.

340: Since the 4x4 pipe will work, if I end up doing the single and eliminating the the cat myself, I'll just use it if its available.

I'll know which route Im going to go when the exhaust shop gives me their quote. Im almost hoping for a high number so I'll have an excuse to spring for the bolt in true duals kit.

Dual exhaust is a waste of money on a low performance truck engine. Stay with a 2.5 single.

If they ended up being pretty much the same price, or if the single installed at the exhaust shop was more than the dual kit, would that change your mind?

Larry,

My '87 is up on blocks right now. It is getting an Edelbrock Intake and a Carter AFB. I am doing away with the leanburn and mounting a Mallory Hyfire 6AL where the factory computer lived. All I need is an early Electronic distributor with a vacuum advance pot. The PO eliminated half the emissions equipment and made it run worse. When I am done with it, it won't have to pass emissions (27 years old), but I guarantee it will run cleaner than stock, without a cat. And with one large exhaust pipe, like my Cummins.
