I was at a swap meet recently and noticed a 70 Dart with splatter paint in the trunk. Did Ma Mopar ever splatter paint trunks or is this something the owner did? The car looked to be original.

Our beloved C-bodies were splatter painted from the factory.

I think on the dry dock we narrowed it down to some specific plants that did it. not all c-bodies were splattered either.
not sure on b's.

Do you know what the color combination was? Like light gray and white or darker gray and white?

Light gray and white...And the original stuff was really splattered on there...An interesting side note..I'm working on a 64 sport fury convert and the body plugs were in when it was coated...Must have been to keep the splatter in the trunk..

Colin, can you post some pics & info on how you splatter painted it?
I've got a 64 Belvedere & want to make the trunk look original. I don't think this photo came from Mosher's site, but think its a real maxie or hemi 64 B body.

I read a story once that a Chrysler exec's wife had her expensive luggage marred or the paint rubbed off on it. He was miffed and the order came down that all trunks were to be painted body color from then on. I can't remember where I read it, Mopar Action maybe. Pretty sure the paint charts show splatter paint for the trunk.

Mosher always paint his stuff splatter paint or zolatone as they call it. I had a 64 Dodge 330 and the trunk has the original paint....it was body color.

My 66 Ply Satellite had the Splatter Paint from the factory in it when I got it out of the Desert. After it was cleaned up and the body painted, I re-shot the trunk using Eastwood's Spatter Paint. Came out perfectly I might add. Check out...

Our '65 Coronet, bought new by my parents and built in Detroit, had splatter paint in the trunk.

Trunk paint may have varied by manufacturing plant. For example, '51-52 Plymouths built in Evansville had body-color trunks, and cars from other plants didn't.

Hi Buzz... I'll get some pics of the sport fury's original trunk splatter paint then I'll show you what Eastwood's trunk paint looks like after being applied to a 65 dodge coronet we just finished up.. Give me a few days to get up to the shop and snap the pics..

Thanks Colin. Car was orig red & was repainted white, so don't know if the trunk was body color or splatter. Assy plant was Lynch Road if that helps.

Hey Buzz...Sorry for the delay got hung up at work last week but had a chance this week to get the promised pics...

These first set of pics is the available splatter paint from the Eastwood company...There's different companies making this stuff and I'm not sure who actually make theirs...So far I have'nt really seen a big difference in manufacturers products in a spraybomb...You basically get the splatterpaint and clear sealer in a "kit"....Here's a pic of the texture and coloring...

This stuff goes on like the name implies.. ..You'll need to hit it with a medium coat then give it time to flash...You cant spray it too thick ,it'll just move the flakes around creating bare spots instead of giving coverage...The "base" of this stuff is NOT gray as you would assume but some type of clear carrier for the two colors..

Here's a shot of the hinge area note there's no masking with the factory applied coating...

Here's a shot looking back twards the tailpanel area...And the biggest tip I've got for you to speed up the process...After the first attempt with the aftermarket splatter paint available today {we've tried a few brands} left us with less than desireable results in coverage especially the darker colors...We now end up leaving the trunk with a gray sealer instead of body color... It really cuts down on the material needed for the coverage...Then blend the "edges" of the splatter paint into the body color...

Now, for comparison, here's a 64 sport fury convertible's original splatter paint...WAY different than anything I've found available...As you can see the white splatter areas are much bigger and actually "splatter" through the gray paint...{click on the attachments}

Here's a shot looking back at the divider area of the trunk...One thing to note as I stated earlier the trunk plugs were in when it was sprayed...You can see the original body color{white} under the body plugs...we've carefully removed and labeled them for reinstall..

Here's a shot of the tail panel area...Check out how the white flecks splattered...These two colors were "liquid" when sprayed..You won't get the stuff available today {in the spray can} to do that...
