Dual ballast resistor...operating temp??

I have a buddy who is experiencing some ignition problems with his 440 powered 79 4 wheel drive. It runs great until it warms up, then begins to misfire. He has already replaced the coil, ballast resistor and electronic ignition wiring harness. He complained about burning his finger on the resistor, to which I explained that's why it's encased in ceramic! Now he tells me he checked it with his infra-red, and it shows an operating temp of 485 degrees! That sound excessive to me but I can't find any info as to what would be considered normal?

Well, hot enough to burn your fingers is normal, but I dunno what that equates to in degrees.

OE 4 terminal "dual" ballast or 2 terminal "single" ballast in the MP ign conversion kit? What ECU? Check the reluctor gap. Possibilities are dist pickup or ECU. when it starts to miss when hot does it miss all the time? When did it start? any part changes preceding the missing? What is your timing?

Tell him to check the ECU ground. Might be rusted. Or just run a wire to battery so there is no question. Might be the source of his problems.

Sounds like it's the pickup unit in the distributor , they will run bad once they get hot ..
