I've been looking for quite some time, but I hadn't been able to close a deal for various reasons. Most recently I had to put about $3k into my daily driver so I thought my truck hunting had come to an end. Then I found this one. I only paid $1500 for it. Its an '89 with 318, 2wd, all stock, still has working factory radio, heat/defroster work, a/c needs servicing, I think a charge and some seals will do it. Nothing is hacked up on the truck. Body is solid with only some surface rust here and there, and there are two punctures on the bed rail that look like nail holes. No other issues that I could see. I need to look at the rear end/gears. Nice and solid all the way around. He had already done the brakes with new rotors, pads, drums, shoes, and wheel cylinders, didn't replace the calipers. He also replaced plugs, wires, rotor/cap, valve cover gaskets, headlights. All stuff that I would have had to do, so at this price having it already done is a plus. The water pump went out and I think he was tired of putting time into it so that's where I come in. I put the new water pump in today and did oil and filter. She runs nice and smooth, quiet, and ran just fine on my test drive. Interior is in pretty good shape too. Im ready to tear into it. My original plan was to find something that I would do in Satin Black with gloss black accents, like the DODGE on the tailgate, maybe some kind of accent stripe. I really liked a members car that I saw years ago (Exit1985 or something like that) who had a satin black RR IIRC, with two gloss black racing stipes. Now Im thinking that I really like this Charcoal Gray color. We'll see. Either way, I plan on following the steps in the infamous "paintjobon a budget" thread. OK, heres the pics. roe

Oh yeah, that'll do! Good game plan on the paint scheme, that's what I have in mind for mine. Best bang for your buck on these is to go electric fan, throw away the catalytic convertor, and true duals: You'll get another 1 to 2mpg and it won't feel choked up anymore. After that, it's all a matter of personal taste. D250 control arms to lower it, take a leaf out of the back to soften it up a bit, sway bars, flat black your grill, Ramcharger seats/console, maybe a 360 with J heads, the list goes on for what I want to do with mine. Have a look at Your steering coupler if there's some play in the steering wheel, it's a weak spot on these trucks.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely try to get the stuff above the windshield tackled first. So far there doesn't appear to be any major issue there, but I have to investigate further. Is there a seam sealer that you guys recommend? Something I can paint right over? I'll look at the steering coupler too, but it feels nice and tight while driving.
I plan on ditching the catalytic converter and running true duals with a H-pipe. If I can get some headers from a guy who was selling a truck, then I'll throw them in as well, or maybe some shorties. If not, I think I'll be fine just running the exhaust off of the manifolds.
While replacing the water pump I was mulling over whether to go electronic fans or just replace the the clutch.
Also, I don't know if I'm going to mess with the ride height. I kind of like where it is now. I'm going to do the suspension (there's a missing strut rod bushing) and drive it a while though before I decide.

remember you have a TBI engine. You cant go crazy with mods. A good single 2.5 system with a Hooker Aero Chamber muffler will be more than ample and sound great.

Yeah, I was wondering how far I can go with performance mods with the tbi. How much power can it support? I plan on keeping all of the tbi system in place, and trying to make this a daily driver that sounds good too.
I read the thread about the Mustang tank/sender, but I'm probably going to leave the stock tank. So I think my exhaust ticket is going to most likely be manifolds, but I'm strongly considering shorties, 2.5" pipe into a 1 in 2 out muffler with duals out the back behind the tires. I had it like this on the truck I sold and it sounded pretty good.
If I were still in FL I would pick up the stuff from you that you just pulled off. But I guess I'll take care of the exhaust after I deal with the suspension.

with the TBI/computer as they are about all you can do is try some 360 injectors and possibly a 360 computer. The 360 computer has a different timing and fuel curve than the 318 computer. HP wise your about maxed out as it sits. Some lower gears in the rear will help also.

That's a little disappointing not not a big deal. I was never planning on trying to make a lot of power with this thing. Just a nice solid driver. So I think it just cements my plan to do an exhaust system, maybe some shorty headers, single in dual out muffler for dual tips

I don't think your going to say any gain going from manifolds to a shorty header IMO and my experience putting a set on. You will gain some with full length headers, but if this is going to be a daily/cruiser, lower RPM, manifolds will work just as well. Magnum ones flow a little better, but you need to do something with the kickdown linkage---at least I did (I put pacesetter shorties in place of stock magnum manifolds.)

Nice truck..I bought a 88 d250 with 318 4 sp a few months ago for the same price..very clean..
Later this year I am going to dump the tbi and install a carb...

NICE! As far as the tank, a tank from a Ramcharger can be made to fit (biggest hurdle is swapping crossmembers). Having the tank in back, rather than the side, gives the truck a better ride and makes duels a snap. Only downside is that it does away with the spare tire mount. If you used a tank from a same year Ramcharger, you would have the intank pump setup your TBI truck needs.

I've learned the hard way if ain't broke, dont fix it, . Since I made myself keep this think simple/stock, I dont plan on moving the tank. It doesn't have any leaks and isnt causing me any issues, so Im not gonna touch it. Even though doing so would make it easier for true duals. Im just going to do a single 2.5" and split it after the mufflers dumping out the side behind the tires. And that way I can keep the spare tire as well. If I can get this thing be where I want it, then I can sell my late model daily driver, an '03 Lincoln LS.

I found the pic of the members car that I want to use his color scheme on my truck. It was member BlackWidow69, Exit1965. Exit also rolled his vehicle too though.
