Bill,

So what is the difference between zinc plating and cadmium plating? And would that effect the shine?

Not sure I comfortable answering this one. But
I know they are/were targeted towards corrosion protection differences.

As far as visual differences?
Again , not 100% but I think zinc tends to be a tad shiner than cad plated items. But don't quote me on that.

Within the plating industry the move has been to Zinc as it is environmentally more friendly, CAD is still the choice within the aviation industry for several reasons as it's corrosion protection under standardized salt spray tests are superior to zinc, as well as other benefits over zinc particularly when placed in contact with aluminum (galvanic compatibility for fasteners). Due to the fact corrosion within aviation drives maintenance fees and pose safety issues, I have not seen any push to move away from CAD.

Only to the trained eye (someone who works regularly with CAD and ZINC would you be able to tell the difference between the two, assuming they are processed identically (base material finish and brighteners or not) as both are shades of grey in color.

Ok, thank you AAR#2. Taking the pics I posted as examples, what would you say about them plating wise? hit, miss, strike out, home run, compared to originals or OE basis?

While pictures can be difficult due to lighting and reflection, I would say the pictures you posted appear typical of what one would expect to see for plating as delivered by Chrysler.

FYI, It appears the first photo may have used brighteners and or a better surface finish to start, and the 2nd of the wiper barrel appears to have no iridescent finish (or very little)

Ok, good to know! The horn and starter relay did seem to have some more shine to them when I had sent them off as the areas where they were mounted to the rad support and firewall were in great shape but the rest had oxidation take its toll. The finish of the barrel of the wiper motor is the exact same sheen as before it was replated and did have a lot less of the "rainbow" effect compared to the relay housings.

Everything was in perfect condition prior to being sent out for replating rust or pit wise. Below is the parts prior to sending them out for replating. All of the smaller things like the carb linkage and such were soaked in carb cleaner when I was cleaning up the carb as there was paint and other garf all over them. This ended up stripping the plating off. The power steering pressure hose is the original one off the car and has the penta star, part number, and correct date coding too. They were able to replate that without damaging the rubber hose.
