I've been wondering the same thing.
Thought about trying it and just keeping a spare coil in the car but I figured the ecu would be safe since its power doesn't run thru the ballast.

No but the coil primary runs thru the ECU box at thats what grounds the coil primary and if you up the coil pos volts from 5-7 to 12 it will put more current flow thru the coil ground side of the ECU box. Dont know if it would be enough more to hurt the ECU box but it could. Thanks for all the replies. Ron

Ron, the 200 to 400 VDC was with an MSD ignition. As you know, the point stuff is really only like 9 VDC or so via the resistor.
We did get off track from your initial question and I guess I caused that by my "point of curiosity" question.
I concur with your statement though, about bypassing with an electronic box, that's more load through that transistor that I wouldn't want to see.

I'll also add this tidbit of information, while testing on the dyno I found that the pulls with the ballast installed repeated closer to each other than the pulls without.
I have to believe consistency in a bracket racer would be better with it. Keeping the input voltage the same versus a 12 volt supply that fluctuates with a charging system is worth something.
I would take consistency over an added couple of horsepower any day.
