I have one that the steel has rusted out on the inside where the hinge bolts to

I had a guy awhile back tell his was steel but his 84(which he said happened to be the same color as mine) came factory with a 440 Magnum Police Interceptor

Well he posted a pic with a Shop magnet(large and most likely Stronger than most) on it BUT it was one that normally had the big trim in the center and Im pretty sure the tabs for the trim are imbedded metal tabs so Im still not convinced

I thought they were all fiberglass, as heavy as they still are...

That's what I'm talking about Harry The guy I'm talking about claimed metal on has when I sold him a rear glass & gasket I just grinned & shook my head & took his $$$ He didn't even realize that he was standing next to the one his parts came from & the other three made from fiberglass it was leaned against

everything he was talking was BS

Oh he took this pic. To me the strength of the magnet and the fact the trim tabs are metal seems the reason the magnet stayed. Convieniantly it was sold the same day lol.

Directly from Allpar, which has a really good reputation for fact checking.

Quote:

The 1981 was the first year of the redesigned Ramcharger. A Royal SE package was added with more options; a Big Horn cosmetic/convenience package was added; and trailer towing was made optional with a light duty configuration or a heavy-duty four wheel drive configuration. Numerous convenience features were optional as the Ramcharger was pushed upscale by buyer demand. This was the first year of the nonremovable top, making the Ramcharger a true modern SUV, and wraparound rear quarter windows were integrated with the roof. The new liftgate was lighter weight, using fiberglass, and had two pneumatic helpers. The base engine was the 318 with two-barrel carb, putting out just 120 horsepower at 3,600 rpm - similar to the same engine in the Diplomat and actually less than turbocharged Dodge four-cylinder engines would be producing just a few years later (but with more torque). A four-barrel carburetor was optional, as was the 360 V8 with two-barrel carb.

There is a metal plate behind that area, not just for the trim, but also for the lock and latch rod mechanism.

He probably hunted for a few minutes to find a spot for that magnet to hold. just about anywhere else on the door higher or lower and it would never have worked.

Ohhh wait.... Maybe its the metallic paint! Thats is... For sure!

For anyone that has ever tried to carry a truck door, just imagine the weight on one of those back hatches, made of steel, and glass.

The fiberglass hatch is almost impossible to open with one person if the gas springs give out. A steel one would take a small crane, possibly kill (or at least really hurt) someone if the thing dropped.

I have heard the claim, well this is steel, it came from a Police, or Border Patrol, or Forestry Service, they were built stronger. No, its fiberglass.

The ones that I've seen done with metal like described in that thread had aluminum tread plate epoxied in the recess If you cut the bottom off how does it latch anyway
