Tony - The original hood on my 71 340 N-96 Challenger did not have hood pins.

No, they were two separate options, N96 and J45.

My Challenger vert didn't have them but it does now. I bought the car in July 1972 when I was in the Navy stationed in Great Lakes, Ill. I came out to my car one evening and someone was in the process of stealing the shaker setup - the hood had been popped open and all the brackets were just finger tight. No one was around so I figured someone was coming back that night to get it. I bought a chain and padlock and chained it from behind the grille to the lower radiator bracket and the hood latch. The next weekend, I installed the hood pins in the stock place on the hood and put padlocks through the pins. No more problems. I now have the hood pins even though it didn't originally have them. That's probably how some of these cars ended up with pins - to prevent theft.

I remember back in the 80's, I replaced the pins with an aftermarket set with a round key to lock the hood..what were those keys called? chapman?

Chrysler used to offer a set of locks to go through your existing factory pins just for that reason. I have a set in the box somewhere. I've posted pics of them before.

Restoring a car to look "only" as good as the factory made it is like getting a boob job for your wife and having the doctor make them two different sizes to seem more natural

round security key. After they were unlocked you pushed the bezel down and the hold-down released.

I remember my next door neighbor had a "Chapman" lock setup installed on his 442 back in 1981/82, it was on his hoodpin setup, and on the inside under the dash...it's been a long time since I've heard that name LOL
