getting ready to use my nos 69 barracuda fenders and i noticed that they don't have the center braces. it's obvious they never had them. is this the way they came? does anyone make or sell the center brace?

It's a seperate piece that bolts on, so it should be a seperate part numbered part. Don't know if they repro it. Might even be the same part number for a Dart. Or Dart brace might work with a slightly different bend.

Weird they didn't punch the hole for the brace. Maybe that goes along the line of thought that replacement parts are often rejected assembly line parts later determined OK for replacement part use.

The braces on my 69 Barracuda were spot welded on from the factory. A connector flange appears in your photo.

Depending on how crafty you are, I believe these could be fabricated to look exactly the same as original. If you want drawings and specs, PM me. My fenders are off the car.

It's likely NOS or parts counter fenders have neither emblem holes nor radio antenna holes. Some discussions of assembly line procedures have said these holes were made in the Metal Shop and were not in the stampings.

I've got 4 68 barracuda fenders. Two on the car two off car. One on car is an NOS replacement and I could see the part numbers in white on the inside.

All 4 of them have slotted holes stamped in the pads. But one has the brace spot welded on like kenj340 has but still has the redundant unnecessary punch slot.

I wonder if they make a running change in 1968 to spot welded braces. Or was there just variation and two different acceptable ways the fenders could have been made (two vendors?) ??

I wonder if 1968 and 1969 Darts have a similar brace situation? Lots more of those fenders around to observe.

Here's a 1968 fender with a spot welded brace but oval adjusting hole.

Here and 1968 NOS fender that was installed on my Barracuda at one time. It was painted black when it was NOS.

Originally black as NOS.

Great question. Just thought of that myself a couple of minutes ago and looked at the car. (I should have remembered the answer since I put spacer there to help push the fender out for tire clearance.)

The braces that are bolted on the fender lip tab, also bolt to the inner fender here were a nut is welded to the inner fender. So if you don't have that nut on you inner fender, I'll assume the car had a welded in brace. That brace was welded at the fender lip tab AND welded on the other side of the brace to the inside part of the fender.:

Here's the "bolted-in" inner fender.

Here's a viable solution. Here's a 68 Dart fender brace (bolted on both sides BTW). You could weld it on. The stamped ridge is the same size and length.

It just needs a bend added at the fender lip and maybe the bend at the inner part of the fender changed some. And knock the weld-nuts off.

68 Dart center fender braces will be much easier and cheaper to find than Barracuda ones. I don't know if the bolted on Barracuda ones are the same or close lengths as the welded on ones
