I'm planning on getting my engine rebuilt this winter and I'll be having a lot of questions, 1st is there a link to help me with this procedure?
Can this be used to support the K-frame and transmission when i raise the vehicle?

IMOP, I wouldn't use it Jim. I would get a K-member/ tranny stand that is designed/made specifically for the intended use. Uscartool.com has what you need. I've seen guys use a engine hoist to lift the front end up. Brackets were made to bolt to the bumper bolt holes and then the hoist was chained to the brackets, lifting the front of the car up enough to slide the k-member with the engine and tranny. Challenger1 is a member here and that is what he does when he works on his cars(GOOD info from him, P.M him?). Maybe he will see this post and chime in.

Good luck!

I just did this last weekend. I used $16 worth of Harbor Freight casters and a couple of 4"x4"s and 2"X4"s. There area couple of threads with this info over in the new forum "Moparts Member Projects". Mine is the '71 Demon project.

I use a simple device I made that looks like a Y. It hits on two of the k frame bolts and sits under the tranny cross member. It has rollers and I use eye bolts through the shock towers and hook them up to a chain hoist and raise the car.

If you're just pulling the eng for O-haul, I'd pull just the engine out the top and be done with it.

I'll also be switching out my spindles with A-body ones to switch to disc brakes and replacing all the suspension components with Moog. Out the bottom seems to be the way to go. I just need the proper procedure and necessary tools.

Jim,
Your're on the right track. Once you do it this way you will never do it any other way. Here are a couple of pics of two cars that I have done. I am about to pull the engine out out of my Dart this December but I think that I am going to make a slightly simpler set-up to hold the engine. Either way, It's the only way to go in my opinion.

Can I rent your jig?
I'm having a hard time spending a lot of money for something to use once or twice.

Hello,
I have found that sitting the oil pans on the dolly and leaving the K hang free, makes it easier to line up the K bolts. But it is really easy to do from underneath and no special dollys are needed if you ask me. I used my engine lifting spreader bar to bolt to a old set of bumper brackets to lift with. I used old ones for fear of them bending but they did'nt bend and I wound up blasting them clean and using them on this car. Hope these pictures help. Use a good cherry picker too. The first time I did it I had the lower controll arms hanging there loose, but it's easy to mount all that, after the K is bolted up. So that's how I did it the final time.

I did it twice, first time with just a homemade creeper. I worked fine but the wheels wern't strong enough and the creeper was a little low.

Look no front wheels or jack stands.

Oh yea, the final install I had already installed the interior with dash and a whole bunch of other stuff and still did'nt have a problem lifting the car with the bumper brackets.

I use my floor jack under the K to lift the car with the engine installed...remember my dolly is not under the K.

Jim,

I used a atv jack under the motor/kframe and a regular floor jack under my tranny. It worked vey well. The atv jack was rated for 1500lbs. I was very careful when moving it. There are pictures on my site in my signature of the install. For me it worked great. First time doing it from the bottom. I agree it is the easiest way to install a motor. Good luck

One 4"X6" to rest the K member on
One 4"X4" to rest the tranny crossmember on
Two 2"X4"s holding the two together.
Four 5" caster from Harbor Freight ($18.00 total)

I can move the complete unit around the shop by myself, no problem. A lot cheaper than buying a jig and took my about 10 minutes to put together.

Thanks for all the replies!
I guess I'll have to rig something up. Is there a certain height I should strive for to get the assembly up to in able to work underneath?
