I am going to try and start getting my old ratty seats re-done soon and I was wondering who here has a good vendor to recommend for getting these covers?

I would like if they were as close to factory as possible as far a grain goes but I am more concerned about quality/durability and the fitment. Any experiences you guys can share on this topic?

FWIW the car is a 1973 Charger SE with a white interior.

Who to use and who to steer clear from?

Thanks!

Haven't heard anything bad about Legendary Interiors

As far as I know, you have 3 choices.

PG Classic, PUI, and Legendary.

I would avoid PG Classic because I don't want covers made in a Chinese sweatshop. I would not have expectations of great quality.

PUI.....my experience was bad on a set of 71 B body covers.
Rear upper cover was horribly loose. Front seats were missing needed provisions for listing wires. Terrible product as far as I was concerned.

Legendary.....I did a set 15+ years ago for a 71 B body that turned out great. No complaints whatsoever...seats still look great.

Did another Legendary set for 72 B body a few years ago....was not quite as happy with. Front upper covers were looser than they should have been and puckered in spots. Thinking it was either a "me issue" or a foam issue, I had an upholstery shop give it a whirl, with new repro foam. Came out about the same. They then steamed the heck out of the covers and foam and got them better, but still not nearly as nice as the covers I had done 15 years earlier.

Legendary covers are well known for the buttons coming loose and falling off. Expect to replace some of the buttons from time to time.
This has been an ongoing issue for many years, that to the best of my knowledge has never been fixed.

Oh wow! Thanks for letting me know about this. I guess I will be using Legandary as I have heard horror stories about the PUI products and the prices of PG classics are almost too good to be true...

I contacted Dante and will be ordering me rear seat cover! I wish I had more disposable income right now or I'd finish my two front seats as well.

Thanks as always for the input!

I'll second the buttons coming off. I have their front covers on my 74 Roadrunner. I have a bag full of replacement buttons and have replaced several. The 40 year old back seat is 100% fine but those new covers need attention.

Bought mine Legendary Seat Covers from Dante's, and saved some good money, and quick delivery to Canada.

I have the seat covers on order from Dante's and now I wondering how hard it is to put them on yourself vs. paying a shop to do it.

I have been told several times the back seats are pretty easy and all you need are the hog ring pliers. My back seats are in decent shape with just the usual surface rust on the frame/springs.

How hard is it to tear these down and install the back seat covers yourself? I am torn between investing in the tools to do this myself or just take them and have them installed.

Thoughts?

I did the covers on my Roadrunner with the help of my dad. Saved a ton of money and was not very difficult.

Where should I get a decent set of hog ring pliers from? Do I need the straight ones, angled, or both?

What is a decent paint to use for the frames/springs?

I use the straight hogring pliers 98% of the time... ...And here's the best tip I can give you...The transition area from the headrest to the wider seat area is going to be the problem on that year seat..Most home installs goof it up and have creases/buckling in that area...

Just installed new legendary in our 70 challenger,,,leather front, vinyl rear which is correct for so called leather option.

Had them professionally installed by a top quality local upholstery shop,,,,Finish Line Interiors, Santa Clara, Calyfornua. Came out perfect,,,,even the best components improperly installed(think pistons for example) can turn out poorly and the vendor is the first to be blamed,,,,not to suggest that often they are not the culprit.

Labor charge to remove/install seats, install covers/buns, rattle can paint mounting brackets, install shoulder belts to roof was 14 man hours. And these guys are experts. I suspect that many do it your selfers do in less time than this, and then wonder what went wrong.

I can and will do almost my own mechanical work, but just as I would not try to straighten a crumpled fender or bumper, I would prefer not to compromise my interior and a great set of covers on a self learning expedition.
