Yes define budget or ET goal. I bought my car turn key for $5500 and it ran 10.60's.

(Of course, that was in 1993.)

Car was given to me in stock form in 94. Base motor and trans was a junk yard E58 360 / 727 from another 79 300.= $325. Probably got 14K in the motor as it sits. Another 600 in the trans and 800 in the diff and suspension - did myself. Cage, fuel system, interior, other mods were some-what off set by selling original interior and I did all work ( Body and paint also = probably another 3K. Odd ball mid 10 second car for about 27K.

"Low Budget" is a relative term

Everyone will have a different perspective of that

How about around $5,000 or there abouts (give or take)....

Or a build with extraordinary performance per dollar spent.....

That would also be included in my definiton of "Low Budget".....

Well true that part wasn't as cheap as some, but those 67-69 barracudas aren't $500 anymore either.

About 6K in the engine, 418 c.i., 360 block, 4.100 crank, 4.03 bore, production heads-nicely ported, STX-22 Racer Brown flat tappet cam, victor 340 intake. $900 C&S carb, $1700 in 727 trans w/ tranz-act brake and dynamic converter. In 1990 I paid $3500 for running high 11sec. matching #340 Demon, which I raced for a couple years until a piston and rod exited the block at the finish line. I did spend about 2K switching from leaf springs to ladder bars and Koni coil over shocks, $4500 for an alterKtion front suspension and another $500 updating the roll bar to a full cage. Car has had several motors over the years from a $700 318 that ran 11.70s, a couple .04 over stock crank 360s, that one went 10.35, and the other 10.25. Every motor that has been in the car has won way more $$$ than I had in it and I sold the 318 for almost triple what I had in it, and the other 2 360s I still own, One needs a sleeve as it cracked a cyl just under the deck and the other one broke a crank, has been repaired with a new stock stroke 4340 scat crank, which will be in the car for the start of the 2014 season. Best ET has been 9.68 at 136mph. with the engine in the car now, [418 c.i.], has over 1800 passes, and has won as much as 10K in one day and probably close to 100K total including two wheelie contests. A low budget car that has given me a very good return on investment, not to mention the fun it has been along the way.

I built the whole thing myself so for what it is it was
pretty budget... full moly chassis, small block N/A
that runs 8.90s in the 1/4... so for that I'd say its
a real budget build for what I have into it... cant
say that if you add in my time... but this is the stuff
I enjoy doing

If I wasn't there watching the build all along, I would call you a liar... but it's unbelievably true.

Mine is getting more and more out of control (expensive) as I keep leaning on it.

But I traded my labor on 3 transmission rebuilds for the whole car. Core motor was free out of a county truck. Traded an old 300,000 mile beater truck I had for the machine work and port job.

$1000 into the trans converter (built myself)
Traded a trans rebuild to Mr. P and some cash for the roll bar/turbo fab work.
$1000 in parts on the motor
$3000 in turbo parts.
The rest is just junk I stole out of DVW's attic (including the used 3.23 gear, and borrowed posi).

I re did the seats, put carpet in it, new wheels/tires, fuel system etc... I probably could have done it even cheaper if I had left it a little more ratty, but that wasn't what I wanted.

I had ~$8k in it when it ran at the track on the first day. Went 10.99. Later went all the way to 10.08 with more boost, but hurt some parts along the way, so you have to count them in the expense. Probably would go mid/high 10's all day without breaking parts as first built though.

Not $5k, but in the 10's for $8k isn't bad. It would be in the 9's if it were a lighter A-body for the same cost.

Doug no ofense at all meant here as I love that 64 of yours but I dont see how you could have even got the parts for your car under 15k. So I assume you had or traded for alot of the parts. When I look at your beautiful car it makes me think you got 15k in paint work. Cause it is nice. Ron

Thats a nice budget build. I think you have 11's in your car with more tuning and tme. My old 440 build is very close to it as I had a stock shortblock with KB pistons at 10.0 comp and 906 heads I ported. Same .557 cam and Street Dominator intake with an 850 DP and Hedman 1-3/4 headers. In my 3700 lb 63 it got a best of 11.49 @ 116 and I would guess I had about 3k in parts as I got the car for $1200 big ones and had some of the parts. Also did all the work myself including the heads as I use my brothers valve grinding equipment.
My new eng I built (my 493) I spent alot more on parts as I would say that the money parts were :

Stroker kit (crank, pistons, rods, bearings, rings and the rest of the bottom end kit).....$2000.

Heads (Indy EZ) with cam and lifters and valley plate and dual plane intake with machine work on heads.....$3500

TTI 2" headers and TTI full to rear bumper 3" X-pipe exh and Ultra-Flow mufflers.....$1400

This was the three big spenders that put that build around 7k plus many small extra parts needed in all builds put me about 8k.
But this was one eng I decided to use good new parts and stop throwing engines together with used parts as thats all I usually had the money for. And between my brother and I and a good friend we usually came up with enough parts for me to afford to build a cheap eng and car on the small budget I had.

I bought the 63 for $1200 dollars and alot of work on my buddies cars and thats how I managed to build the first 440 budget eng that ran 11.49.
I have about 8k in parts tied up in the 493 but I wanted to for once in my life build an eng on not so tight a budget that would put me in the 10's on pump thru the pipes just like I drive it. You can click this link http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/mmo82008.html
which is also in my sig for more info on my budget build or just PM or E-mail me if I can help with any questions. But you build now is very close to my first 440 in here and I am sure you will have it in the 11's soon. Ron

LOL budget mopar racing!! This crap cost wayyy too much. For the money I've invested (my setup is stupid simple) I could easily have an 8 second street car fox body or G body haha

I have seen the recipt log. It's tracked to the dollar.

He (dvw) has been good to a lot of his friends over the years, and finally called on all of those buddies to give them a chance to return a life of favors.

All those years of building motors, transmissions, setting up rear ends, helping to assemble restorations, wiring cars... Etc.... Finally paid off.

I say this ALL THE TIME.

Low budget and Mopar are very hard to put in the same sentence....To me, low budget is car and build for under 10k- if you can do that with a mopar and run some respectable times, you have my attention.

I think dizuster's car is probably a good example of a budget build.

I believe it I do alot of stuff for friends for free and call them up if I need something. Most of the little stuff that nickels and dimes you to death can be had for free with the right set of friends. I have atleast one good friend in all aspects of a build, parts, fab, paint and body, machine work, etc. Not all do free work but I can call in alot of favors if I need to and I have a decent set of skills as well. I have less than 5K in my whole car including buying it. Now as far as ET's, My 60ft sucks so bad I don't know what it would run all out but it runs back to back 90mph passes in the 1/8th with a best of a 2.10 60' I have only hurt the motor twice in two years and all it needed both times were head gaskets.

Doug no ofense at all meant here as I love that 64 of yours but I dont see how you could have even got the parts for your car under 15k. So I assume you had or traded for alot of the parts. When I look at your beautiful car it makes me think you got 15k in paint work. Cause it is nice. Ron

The value of the pile of parts that were donated far exceeds what I spent I will agree. Total labor spent was less than $700. Many guys stepped up with parts and labor. Very few new parts,converter,gear/axles/spool,crank trigger, vacuum pump, valves, springs, tappets, cam, intake, headers, front tires, bearings, drive shaft and gaskets. Everything else was used. I did all the sheet metal, cage, engine, trans, axle, suspension, wiring, plumbing. It took a little over 5 years to build. I agree if I had to buy all the parts new there would be over 40K. I don't even want to think about how much labor would cost. If it wasn't for my friends and family I'd still be running my Volare

how many oil pans in the wheelie contests? budget builds can be done,it just takes patience,be open to change as parts become available, and who you know.wheeling and dealing parts to get what you want or need always helps.ive trolled around and found incredible deals on parts, just drove 300 miles and bought a full race tci 727 w/brake for 300 bucks from a retired racer.i have also traded labor for a brand new pair of b1 heads and a 400-230 thick wall block.i search craigslist all over the country, racinjunk and of course moparts.if I need a part, more often than not its just a matter of searching the right places...the whole idea is to get what you need, promote the sport, and help others who need parts,labor,etc.... theres way too many people out there who take advantage of people with STUPID prices . even here at times in the parts for sale section you occasionally see this happen, and I am pretty sure we all KNOW WHO.....

i don't know if you'd consider this low budget, but because i could afford it, i do. I built the car myself with assistance of friends for the tricky bits, the original purchase included the 1 piece lift off front end in Kevlar, complete with doors & bootlid for a meer $1500. i upgraded the driveline over the years as i saw things needed attention. it's probably a big $ car now but the funds were spent slowly & wisely as it developed.

Thats great Doug. I like to do all my own work myself also but when it comes to welding and sheet metal work I am not the greatest. I can weld but am no pro at it for sure. My problem is my back and knees have slowed me down a ton. Glad to see all came together so well on your 64 as you have to be very happy. Heck I am tickled pink to have my 63 let alone have a low 9 second car. Nice build indeed. Ron

Everyone's version of "cheap" varies I'm sure. But here's my low dollar hauler from back in the day...

69 Dart
OE 68 440 w/parts store tank, hone.
OE 67 heads, parts store VJ, not ported, 2.08/1.74 stainless valves
MP .484 hyd cam w/OE stamped rockers
OE electronic dist with 6AL
OLD Eddy Torker
Holley 750
Pro Parts headers (2")
OE 727 with MRVB
OE 11" converter
3.91 SG

Weighed 3340 with me in it, on a 9x28 slick, went a best of 11.84/114 in good air.

Added a glass 6-bbl hood and 9x30 slicks and went a best of 11.64/115.

Added at 240* -ish Crower hyd cam, 850 Holley, 4.30 gears, an old J converter and glass bumpers...went a best of 11.43/117

Always ran pump gas, NEVER broke...fun car! After a garage paint job, I had $4300 total in the car. Won back about $1000 over 2 years and then sold it for $4500 turn key. Yea, I'd like to have it back...

Seems like the common "theme" with most guys who had a car buildup like this is that they wish they had it back...... Nice build

Great Example

I'll try to post some specs, parts and prices soon, can't do it at work. But stock 360 block based 408, homebuilt 2x3 chassis, strut front end and 4 link. Just off the top of my head I think I have about $15-20k in this car not counting repairs for parts I've scattered.

Oh and while almost every part was bought brand new except of course for the block, trans case and rear end housing. It could probably be duplicated for less by sourcing used parts for a lot of the stuff.

I didn't really keep an expense sheet but I sold off my guitar and amp collection to fund it so I know how much I spent, just not sure what went where.

Here's what I used to have.

73 Duster bought for $900
stock 360 bottom end with KB pistons and a comp 280h cam and lifters. One X head and one J head that when I got them had been port and flow matched. Had about a total of $1200 in machine work and parts.

904 trans with turbo action manual valve body about $400 in having it built and parts.

8 3/4 rear with 3.91 open carrier and drum brakes about $350 in parts and set up.

Front disc brakes off of an Aspen from a salvage yard and new calipers and pads and turned the rotors. = $250

Converter was the stock converter out of the /6 904 I took out of the car.

Bought wheels and tires. $750

Leaving in second gear the car would run

9.18 @ 84mph in the 1/8th
13.94 @ 104 in the 1/4

This was on street tires with an open carrier on cheap gas leaving in second gear (it would spin too bad leaving in 1st). 2.62 60 ft.

If I would have kept it and done a little more to it I am sure that it would have gotten much better.

Back in the swing of things at Painless again! Great to be back!

OK, I can't post all the costs, I just don't have the time to look all this stuff up.

'73 Scamp, nearly rust free that came from Arkansas purchased from an impound lot for $300 here in Florida
W5 heads bought new but I've had them since around '94. I spent $600 for port work back then.
M1 W5 tunnel ram, $250 used
TR linkage $150
2 Demon TR 750 carbs, bought brand new $1500
Titanium retainers $200, had the forever
Used Crane SS roller .700 net lift with 1.6 rockers $75
HS rockers $1000, thanks to Todd at Competition Wedge
BPE 4" stroke crank can't remember the cost.
2.08, 1.60 MP valves ?
Eagle H beams that came from my old 340
'72 360 block, free
machine work and pistons incl balancing and hard block $2200
discontinued Canton oil pan bought from Muscle Motors on a deal $125
Had to make my own pickup tube
Hughes girdle w/studs
Melling pump
HArdened oil pump drive shaft with a Comp Cams bronze gear
Crane roller lifters
Valve springs used and set up from Cab Burge $100?
Trend pushrods $200
I had additional port work done in trade for the pristine sheet metal floor and trunk from the Scamp.

904 trans with the standard ratios.
TA transbrake valve body I think I paid about $600 for way back when.
Built myself with mostly stock parts except for the pump upgrade to the A500 style. Also had the TA 4400 8" converter ($800) gone through at FTI and the CM flat drive hub welded on. ($150)
I had to buy a reman A500 pump for the parts $180 from the dealer IIRC but I get parts at 10% over cost since I worked for them for 26 years.
The rear is an MP aluminum 8.75 case, what are those $700? I've had it for a long time, much of this stuff was in my Duster. 4.86 pro gears from Strange. With bearings and all that's at least $300-400.
Richmond 30 spline spool and Moser axles with of course green bearings and 1/2" studs.
I bought a prewelded back half 4 link frame with the QA1 adjustable coil overs, we shortened the rear housing ourselves but paid $50 to have it jigged and the ends welded on.
We bought a 12 point cage kit from ART and some 2x3 tube to make the frame to the front
I paid $3000 for the Strange 6" travel SS/GT strut set up with brakes which comes with the cut and weld control arm kit.
The rack, mount kit and steering column came from ART as well as did many brackets and tabs.
I bought a Jegs universal door and quarter tin kit, wheel tubs, trans tunnel, firewall and all other aluminum, mostly just flat sheet stock also came from ART.
* gallon Summit fuels cell I've had forever as was the 2 Holley blue pumps. I probably spent about $200 or so on steel braided and aluminum fuel line plus fittings. I already had the regulators.
The master cylinder was an MP unit, the check valve from ART as was all the mounting and pedal hardware.
MSD 7al ignition with a blaster 2 coil, MSD wires, Painless 8 circuit switch panel and harness, Mezerie water pump, ART motor plate, no mid plate, man this just goes on and on.

Weld wheels on the front, you know the the freekin $450 a piece kind. I can't remember the rears, but the company is out of Bunnell Florida, I got a deal on them, brand new but the guy ordered the wrong offset. Since I hadn't cut my rear yet it didn't matter to me, 2 15x15 wheels for $500. That was probably the best score of the whole build for me.

As my sig shows what the car runs, and it would hook in a car wash, it's not even sorted out yet. It's fat and the timing is very conservative (like me) at 30 degrees so I know there's more in it.

Budget my ass.

This is what I started with

And this is what it is today

I don't have this car anymore but it was definitely low budget (less than $3000.00 into the car including tires) it was ugly and it ran pretty good.
My 360 started as a .040 over Napa rebuilt short block. I took it apart to check everything. I had the block decked (deck .015 head 63cc., gasket .028, compression 10.51)reversed the cast dished pistons on the rods and put in good rod bolts and had the rods resized. I put in an old Manley cam that I had. 443 lift 224@.050 I don't remember the lobe seperation but I think it was around 108. I used J heads pocket ported with 2.02 int. valves and 273 adj. rockers an LD340 intake with a 1" 4 hole spacer and a Vac. 750. For exhaust I used heddmen 1 5/8" headers, 3" exhaust with ultra flows ending at the axel. I used a 904 with a Dayco 2,400 stall converter and an 8 3/4 with 3.91's the slicks were 8"x 26"x 14". Suspension consisted of 6yl. bars and comp. eng. adj. shocks in the front and 002/003 superstock springs with Mopar perf. 50/50 xtra long shock in the rear. The car was a 70 Valiant 4 door it weighed 3,320 with me in it. With an electric water pump drive, 5/16" fuel line with holley mech. fuel pump and a homemade fresh air intake (dryer hose and a dual snorkle air cleaner)the best run was 11.96/113 but it typically went 0's and teen's in decent air at Atco and E-Town. Typical 60'was low 1.70's. With a looser converter maybe around 3,500 stall it probably would have gone 11.70's or 80's.

I've admired this car/combo before. I believe it to be the "Champion of Cheap". Extra style points for it being a 4-door!!

I agree the four door valiant is priceless. I have a 72 340 air cleaner and a set of 74 e58 exhaust manifolds for a version of this car. A mid 11 stock appearing version of that car would be more fun than the law allows.

Getting old just means you were smarter than some and luckier than others.

Paid $1500 for the car with 455 Buick running high 12's. I added a spool, rebuilt the trans, an 8" PTC 5000 stall converter, rool bar. Motor is a 440, deepened truck pan, Autotec flat tops, CNC edelbrock performers, 337 intake and a used .060 block I had. I bought a used JW bell to convert to the TH400, motorplate to bolt it down and made my own headers from Summit J-bends. Runs high tens if it's below 80 temp.

I have a 1972 GS I plan on moving the driveline to so I can get 10.5 tires to fit. I love the Mopars but the bodies are just getting too expensive.
