I've got a 77 Ramcharger with power steering, original box, and a new replacement box. Need to know the input shaft spline count. With the milled flat edge they have i am unsure of the actual spline count.

By my best guess / looking / figuring i think it might have started as 30 splines before the flat edge was milled on .

Is that right, 30 splines ?

Need to get another borgeson universal joint, as the pair i have are both 36 splines to "double D". Which seems correct for the steering column output but not the steering box input. Bought a " 1979 to 1992 dodge truck steering shaft " with both ends universaled instead of the rag joint flange. Unfortunately i bought it about a year ago, and haven't gotten around to working on the system till now.

Thanks !

Alright i had set aside the input end steel flange for the rag joint, that came with the remanufactured box figuring i wouldn't use it. Its got 15 splines across about 1/2 its circumference, and smooth near the pinch bolt side. Must be 30.

Found a... 3/4"DD x 3/4"-30... listed universal on Borgesons site.

Hmmm, this may help convince me to know exactly what my rig has , before ordering a replacement/upgrade part in the future...

Well , here is the reply i got from Lares Corp, who rebuilt the steering gear .
**The input shaft is 13/16 with 32 spline count for a part# 1074 **

Part 1074 is the one i bought for a 77 Truck and the unit configuration matches to the old one.

You just confirmed what I said in a reply previously on this very same subject

I knew there was some reason why I have steering shafts with 3 different size splines

I went out & measured one I know I took from a 86 RC 4WD & it's a 13/16" shaft for sure

Thanks BulletBob for the info !

Well , looks like Borgeson does not offer a universal to fit a 13/16"-32spline input. They did have a 13/16"-36 spline. Maybe the Mopar steering box switched to 36 spline after 1979 ??
Heck the factory manual just calls it a " 708 Style " with no dimesions listed. I assume it is a Saginaw make/design although it is never stated as such. Though the factory manual does call the Steering Pump a "saginaw 94".
I forsee having to get a steering shaft with one end flanged for the rag joint to make this work.......

My '72 has the 13/16s-32 as well. I have the rag joint at the steering box, then the borgeson shaft to the steering column.

I thought at the time I could have gotten rid of the rag joint and had u-joints on each end, but I don't remember now if that was true or not.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Just for your information: If you get rid of the rag joint, much vibration transfers through the column to the steering wheel. Much vibration tends to make your hands go numb, not something you really want when it comes to steering. Though the rag joint looks to be a weak point, unless the rubber is shot (which is a cheap, easy replacement item), they are very tough. Most people assume the rag joint is to take up steering misalignment, which is not true, its purpose to strictly to eliminate the transfer of vibration through the column. Unless you have driven a truck without a rag joint, you really have no idea how much vibration is present. Don't eliminate the rag joint. Gene

Thank You hooziewhatsit and poorboy. I'll go with the one end flanged for rag joint, universal on other end.
Really it was overkill wanting the double U-joint style on a truck with no actual body lift [ spring lift only] . Live and learn, especially when money goes down the drain.
I have changed out 2 badly worn rag joints in the past, on a C-body and a different truck, and figured on eliminating that "weak point". Thanks Poorboy for pointing out why its really there.
