i have 78 360 front sump pan. I broke the dipstick tube but I have another one out of a truck. Still have the dipstick but I need to know the length of the tube?. Can anyone tell me its correct length from the block out?

I have a 360 truck motor in the garage and a 318 pass car motor alongside it. I will measure them but I think they will be close. I know the truck dipstick is longer because it travels down a sleeve that is spot welded to the inside of the pan to reach the oil level in the back.

They are not the same! I just measured them and the truck 360 dipstick tube is 9.25" from boss to end of tube and the 318 is 7" measured the same way. The 318 came out of a '74 Dart Sport and I don't know the pedigree of the truck motor. If I were you, I would get an aftermarket universal dip stick that was a least 2.25" longer than your original, then drain and re-fill your crankcase with a full charge of oil, less 1 quart. Insert the new stick in the truck tube and mark the oil level on the stick as 1 qt low. Add the last quart, remeasure and mark that level as full. Easy.
