I'm curious if the 1992 Dakota with the 5.2 magnum has a top speed governor?

My speedo reads up to 120mph, but I haven't ever taken it over about 90mph. Its a small truck, and I'm not as brave as I used to be in the old C barge.

I have done some searching and found reports that the 2nd gen and newer Dakotas have a speed cutoff at either a 98 or 113 mph range.

I guess I'm just curious as to why they would install a speedo that reads past the governor speed (if indeed the 92 has one)

Ive never heard of 1. I believe the limiting factor comes from being out of HP on the top end.

I am truckless..

i've run my shelby dakotas all past 120 mph, with no signs of a governor limiting it from going faster. of course this isn't a magnum engine, just a lowly la 318.

my 92 dak 5.2 ran out of steam at 115mph. 4th gear,TC locked up, down hill with tailwind.

my buddys 2000 Toyota tundra with 265 HP v-8 shuts down at 107mph and holds that up hill down hiil with or without tailwind.

this is how I know the dak goes to 115mph it out runs the toyo on topend.

not sure if it matters, but you guys have the mag motors, and computers. might be a different deal on them, or the fuel system might not be keeping up. throw some higher flow injectors, off the 360, and see what happens.

I had a 94 V 6 with a 5 speed and it ran out at 110 i looked at the tach and it was only at 3500 rpms i remember they used to sell a kit to get rid of it .

I would not be surprised if there was, Chrysler started putting them in the turbo cars as far back as 87 or 88 for liability reasons. Usually its tied to the speed rating of the tires that were on the vehicle when sold new.

I think it was 118 on the average turbo car, the Shelby Z's had Z rated tires and it was set to 256 mph in the code. The code does not let you shut it off, just set to the highest set point.

A cheap "fix" was to place a toggle switch in the speed sensor circuit and just break it as needed, not sure if that is practical on a Dakota or not with computer controlled overdrive.

I read that you can turn the key to the start position when you reach the governed speed and it would disable the governor as long as you held the key there..

I saw something about that on a Dakota Forum yesterday, and that just doesn't sound like a good idea.

Mine does indead have a speed limiter, it cuts out right near or at 115mph. I was not focused on the speedo, but rather the road. I know it climbed over 110mph, but when it cut I looked down and the needle was dropping from 115mph.

The RPM's were not over 4K.

I dont need to bypass the speed limiter, Im not going to be driving that fast again anytime soon. It was a smooth and thankfully uneventful trip to 115mph, but that truck is just so tiny that I dont like it, things move past the window too quickly.

I just recently had the rear swapped to a 3.91 8-3/4 and BOY HOWDY, did that wake up that 5.2 Magnum!!!

I cant wait to take it to the local 1/8mi track this spring for the fun runs.

My next step is to finally install the Jet performance stage II module now that I have my timing issues sorted out (needed a new distributor drive gear and bronze bushing). I also have my Accel Super coil, which oddly has a Caution Death warning on it. (Never seen a death warning on a coil before, Caution shock risk sure, but death?)

Hopefully now it will give me many years, and miles of trouble free service.

It better after all the new parts. New front drilled slotted rotors, wheel bearings, rack and pinion, tie rods, new brakes and hydraulics all around, new speed rated tires, new rear end, new transmission, well maintained engine, had plenum gasket fixed, new timing chain, waterpump, alternator, tuneup, distributor, lots of electrical sensor parts other misc dohicky stuff.

I sure hope the little truck appreciates all Ive done to keep it out of the crusher.

I had one of those Accel coils on my 92 D150 5.2 Magnum, last year after chasing a miss and hard start problem for a few months I traced it to the Accel coil going bad. I put the stock coil back in and its been fine ever since. I also have a Mopar Hi-Performance computer which may move the rev limit up.

great... I will give mine a try, but as always I keep a spare coil, and CPS in the truck from prior experiences...

I don't know about top speed but they do have a rpm limiter which could relate to top speed if it had enough guts to push it that far.

The factory tach doesn't show redline until 4800-5000 rpm, but I was under the 4000 mark maybe its set lower than the tach?

When it "shut down" it was like I lifted my foot, but I hadn't. The truck just sort of coasted and RPM dropped to idle range. Most rev limiters let you "bounce" off the limit range dont they?
