Sounds like the 1st gear synchro is bad. Reverse can be a LITTLE difficult at times since it is not synchronized at all, especially if oyu have let it sit in neutral awhile, the gears tumble when in neutral even with the clutch in. I will generally go to first and then directly into reverse, by ding this you stop the tranny movement and slip it into reverse before it starts back up.
For what it is worth the are not hard to build and it only requires a few "special" tools nothing serious.

I experienced the same thing and found it to be a combination of synthetic gear lube and rounded off dog teeth on first gear. Switching to regular gear lube helped a bit. Grinding is typically from the gear still spinning, which means the stop ring (syncro) is not keeping it from spinning. This could be from the synthetic lube or that it's just worn out.

There easy enough to build, I've never done anything that I didn't do a first time.

Is there a rebuild manual for A833's? Not sure I would just start ripping into a trans without some guidance. Thanks Larry J
ANY FSM is the best source for info regarding building one of these...
They arent hard to build, need a good set of snapring pliers, a press is an asset(you can do it without one, though). what seperates the pro's from the novices is which parts are good and which parts need attention/replacing. Makes the difference in one that works as it should and one that, well,...doesnt..

I live in North Florida and frequent the Philly area if you are within 100 miles of either I'll come walk you through it.
IDing good vs. bad parts is pretty straight forward at worst you can post pictures and we can help ID good vs bad. I learned to build manuals at 16 so it aint that hard. I have only had 1 in 30 years I had to go back into and it was after 8-9 months of hard use. Seems the clearance between the 2-3 gears/synchro on a T-150 is an known issue I didn't know about.

Any grind in Rev is not normal. Input shaft is still turning. My $$ is on the following:
-Pilot bushing tight -Bellhousing out of alignment -Clutch not adjusted correctly

No grind in reverse just hard to shift into reverse at times. But a slight grind into first always unless you are almost stopped. Thanks larry J
Sounds like a clutch problem, dude..
Still a good idea to go through the unit, but you better look close at those items...Does it go in and out of first/rev easily with the engine stopped??
