removed the seat on my 42 dodge truck today. what is this thing on the bottom of the seat for ? it has a lever that moves a disk that opens and shuts the openings.

many years ago, in the very early 70's, i parted out a 46-48 dodge or chrysler [i can't really remember which] that had an under seat auxillary heater. it had that kind of mechanism on the bottom of the seat to, i suppose, control the temperature of your bunz. i don't know if that was a factory or aftermarket deal. was there any unusual holes in the floor in the approximate area under the seat ?

Originally there was material at the bottom of the seat and the vent would allow the firmness of the seat to be adjusted. I have a 46 with the same vent. It took me asking on the yahoo group to get my answer a few years ago.

just goes to show you aren't too old to learn something ! and here i thought it had something to do with the underseat heater ! how heavy was the material used, and did it even come close to working as planned ?

i don't understand how opening and closing the louvers could effect the firmness of the seat. can someone explain how that worked.

I was thinking the same.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

after thinking about this for a while [!] i'm gonna guess this would work like a bellows, and upon the extenson/compression of the springs, the amount of airflow movement resulting from the bouncing effect would be restricted somewhat from the amount of opening in the adjustable lovers. think of the internal orifices of a shock. i wonder if this really worked as planned to increase/decrease seat firmness ? does this sound right ? any other opinions ?

It was called Air-O-Ride in the Pilot House trucks. The seat bottom would have been fully enclosed except for the vent.

It's a fart deflector. Or fart diffuser depending on whether it's opened or closed.
