Hi guys, new to the forum. I searched but didnt find an answer to my question.

I have an 89 D100 with 3.9 and three speed trans. I have a 360 engine out of a 90 d250 thats been converted to carb already, that I am prepared to swap in. the 360 had a push button overdrive trans.

From what I understand I have to use the tq converter for the 360 because of a weight on it to balance the motor.

I was wondering if the 360 tq converter would work on the v6 transmission? I believe both are lockup style transmissions.

I think that is the only thing keeping me from doing the swap some weekend. Thanks.

Most 360s I have ever dealt with used the 727 type heavy duty trans. What is this "push button overdrive trans" you are talking about? I believe the V6 would be using a trans based on the light duty 904 regardless of what it is called and if that is correct the V6 converter would have the smaller neck. Therefore the 360 converter would not fit into the V6 trans front pump. I would test fit the converter to the trans before I got too far down the road with this swap. Good luck.

push button is what i remember my dad refering to it as. His truck had a button on the dash to turn overdrive on and off. Its what the 360 is out of.

Could I just grind off the weight from the 360 converter and weld it to the v6 converter? Or will the v6 converter even bolt to the fly wheel.

thats a OD on/off switch.

a push button trans has buttons for PRND21 on the dash and 2 cables down to trans where the mech linkage would be.

I would buy a weight pakage and have a local trans shop weld the weight to the v-6 TC you have in the trans.

you could also buy the B&M weighted flywheel/flex plate for a 360 to bolt the N balance v-6 TC to.

if they are both the same size trans 727 to 727 or 904 to 904, and both lock up trans then you could swap them.

some time in the late 80s early 90s they changed the trans pump lugs to the flat sides on the TC snout.

as long as they match there..again you good to swap.

IMHO, I would buy the weight kit and have it welded on at local trans shop and use the v-6 TC..it will stall a little higher bhind the 360.

In general, Mopar transmissions are built for the torque they will see. So, when you bolt a 3.9 transmission to a 5.9, you are adding 50% to the torque the transmission will see.

Now, I'm sure a 5.9 would have had an A-727 variant and the 3.9 would have had a 904 variant. So the torque converters shouldn't interchange. You would use the 3.9 converter and the B&M flexplate with the half-moon cut out of it. This flexplate converts a neutral balance converter to the out-of-balance or esternal balance that the 360 needs.

But you still have a weak transmission, unless you build it to suit the new engine.
