May I get some pics of correctly restored heater boxes or some untouched originals? Thank you in advance.

Sweeeet!!
That is super nice Jules. Having done mine (not as nicely as you, mind) those pics all look very familiar.

Except the heater motor - I left that intact after testing it...........now it is all back in the car I turned it on and the motor squeals like a pig
Assessing my options........

Did the large motor plates come both natrual steel and black like yours? The ones I have here have no sign of any paint on them

I have seen them both ways but more often than not they were black.
I have also come across some black on the outside ( visible side) and natural on the inside.
Alan, what years are the ones you have?

The last one I just did was a 73 for sure and the other one I have here is for a 70...I never look close at to see the stamped dates yet, but I think it's original to the car.

You arewelcome rayztoy.
Thank you Bob.
Alan,
there are no date codes on those plates.
The way to tell them apart is by the studs.
70 and 71 plates have flat stud ends while 72-74 have pointed stud ends.

I meant the stamped date codes on the whole assembly itself.
I can check the studs next time I get a chance.

Any suggestions as what to use on the metal parts after beading/cleaning? Clear paint, silver paint, epoxy paint, natural metal, etc? What type for the black, satin, gloss, or flat? Bare or clear the heater box? Thanks in advance!

That would depend on what results you want for YOUR box.
The metal parts are natural so I bead them first, rub them down with 0000 steel wool then clear them.
You could also use Seymour stainless color paint. In some cases I plate them for longer durability.
The black parts are sprayed with T3 Hot rod from Plastikote.
The housings are cleared with satin clear.

GAVIN, Man....I'm sorry that yours went out on you. I know it's a pain and got to be frustrating. But, if it's any consolation, it can happen with new/rebuilt parts too so don't beat yourself up too bad.

I took my heater box apart and thought about reusing my old blower motor. I ended up biting the bullet and getting one from Jules. It came just this week and is really nice. But there is no way my box will look as nice as what Jules can do with one. I'm hoping to put this thing back together this weekend but things keep coming up preventing me from getting it done.

OK..I'm putting my box back together and I'm stumped. Where does this gasket go?

Thanks, Joe

That looks like the gasket for the heater tubes. It seals the box to the firewall.

Joe,
look at my picture 4 from the BOTTOM. It is the gasket that goes around the blower motor.
You have 2 types in the kit.

Thanks guys. I'm sure Jim has it on the instruction sheet that he sent with the kit but the Gremlins have taken it somewhere. You know the ones...they're always taking bolts, screws, tools etc.

I had put it on and it fit but I looked back through my gaskets and realized that mine was the circular type in the photo that Jules has so I swapped it out. I didn't have one this shape in my stuff so it threw me off a little.

Thanks again, Joe

Jules,

Should there be a gasket that goes here? between the flange and the inside of the heater box? The one photo I have of showing this area when I was tearing it down seems to have one but I don't see it in my box of old stuff that came off during teardown.

Joe

Thanks for the info. Jules and the help. Can say this thing is finally done now. Had tons of things that kept coming up and getting in the way. I decided to go with one of Jules Motors so that it would have the correct plating and I'm glad I did. It is beautiful. Thanks to everyone for all the help. Never done won of these before and it wasn't bad at all.

The photo above gives you an idea of what it looked like. Here's the after. Thanks again everyone. Joe

Does look like ther should be a gasket there. I have never seen one but bet heater cores could have been replaced in the couple boxes I used for refrence. I may make that one now.

Jim,
your gasket kits are just awesome.
They are truly the icing on the cake.
By the way I need to order some gaskets.
Can you please call me tomorrow?
Thanks

I think the gaskets would be better with clear self adheavsive backing on them like the originals.
I buy mine in a craft store.

You mean you get the adhesive backing in the craft store?

Couple reasons I don't put the adhesive backing on. The adhesive backing applied costs more than the foam material itself. Also there is a LOT of scrap. Mostly because I like to leave the scrap attached so the foam pieces hold thier shape. I did try the adhesive backing on some items I thought the spray on 3M 77 held better and was easier to reposition.
