ok I got the clearance for the headers on my hemi and valve cover clearance. so before I put the drivers side header on for good or a long while I hope lol. I decided to put the starter in and make sure it would clear everything I bought a starter for a 96 Dakota as this is or was going to be a drag week car so I wanted a starter I could get anywhere in case it goes out. I put it in and pt the battery cable on it and made a jumper wire to see if it would turn over. well the starter locked into the convertor and wouldn't disengage it would just click I have tried to reem out the bottom hole to try and get it to get away from the starter ring and even tried to use washers to shim it out nothing works any ideas

I even went and bought a new gound cable and sanded the block and the motor plate mount to bare metal thinking maybe it was a ground issue the battery is fully charged even put the battery charger to it to make sure it has a 16 volt system on it

Starter Flush in the block ?
Flywheel in good shape?

I'm taking for granted it's a 426 Iron block.

Had an issue where the starter was hitting the block and pushing it down to where it would jam and not release ! Might want to check there ! If that is good is it possible that it's sticking ? Smack it with a wood handle of a hammer and see if it releases !

I tried hitting it that didn't work most of the time turning the motor over with a strong arm wouldn't let it release either

Did you try loosening the bolts, usually there is a little play so you might try rotating it a bit.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Is it staying engaged and trying to turn the motor over?
I had this happen using a Ford type solenoid. It was a cheaper version, and the contacts must have welded together. It stayed engaged. I replaced it with a premium Standard Ignition part to fix it.

it sticks in the fly wheel like its trying to turn the motor over but it wont turn the motor over it just clicks sometimes you can turn the motor over by hand and it will disengage but most the time you have to take the starter out for it to. I hooked a battery charger up to it out of the car and on the boost setting it will act like its susposed to

Just a thought...how's the starter ring on the converter?
had an unknown converter in my car when I bought it, starter chewed up the converter twice before replacing the converter.

Don't know if you did, but I had used studs to hold the starter on, with the studs in there, it did exactly the same thing. I took the lower stud out , put a bolt in it, and used a pry bar to move the starter over as far as it would go, away from the block and tightened the bolts up. Works good now. I even sprayed a little WD 40 on the ring gear, and after a few times starting it, everything is fine.

Also, how big a wire are you using to run to the starter? Battery in the trunk?

This is no ways a smart remark only trying to save you some head aches.Buy you the best starter $$$ can buy, while the starter you have may work fine but chances are its going to fail at the wrong time.I use the Power Master Ultra Torque and I also run a 16 volt Rock battery. If I could lock the converter up it would come close to during a burn out on starter alone.

Recheck the fit ----- on every mini starter I have bought I have had to shave off some material on the side next to the engine block. It does not take much and the starter will then fit flush and correct. Without doing that it does sit at a slight angle but does not look like it at all. There was a big thread about this in the archives a while back.

I had to grind some on my 400 block for the starter to fit.
