Apparently the alternator in my 71 Dart is not charging my battery adequately... someone suggested that I look into a single wire alternator to keep it simple, for the 360 I've got in there... any suggestions on what to get?

I would suggest staying with the OE setup, either a 78 amp alt from a mid 80's M body or a denso If you can do some slight mods so it will mount up.

Was it a GM guy? They LOVE one-wire alternators.

I would go to your friendly neighborhood parts store (Kragen, Parts City, etc.) and get one of their alternators, WITH some kind of warranty. If it fails (and if it's a bad one, it probably will w/i a year) you get another one.

I know around here, the local rural mail carriers get all their parts like that, because their junk usually fails eventually with that kind of hard use...and then they get replacements.

ex-Ford guy, but Mopars nowadays

Actually, it is the one guy at the shop who also has a 71 Swinger that he's got set up pretty nicely.. what's the disadvantage of a 1-wire over the OE setup? Seems like it would be a better option (less wiring = less opportunity for problems)

the only befefit to a one wire alternator is a built in regulator. thats a blessing and a curse. they seem to work ok, but if the regulator goes you have to replace the alternator. on the chrysler stuff, if a regulator goes you just unbolt it from the firewall.

is this a new problem? alot of guys when the start adding fuel pumps and electric fans, etc etc. run out of amperage from the early chrysler alternators. also if your running underdrive pulleys they decrease the speed of the accessory and all with it the power output.

also check to make sure that the voltage regulator has a good ground at the firewall. i usually run a ground strap to mine directly from the engine.

Get a 100 amp Powermaster from Summit. I got free shipping recently on one and it charges well at idle for me. Way better than a parts store alternator.

I would not use a single wire alternator.

I would not have a one wire if I had not completely rewired the car. Factory stuff works good. A 100A Powermaster would be my choice.

What's wrong with using a one-wire alternator?
I bought my Powermaster 140 amp 8-47529 back in 2004 (have the receipt to prove it),
have used it daily and it is still going strong
As long as your battery is fully charged you should be fine
