I have a '67 Coronet 383 Auto. Sometimes when I go to start it I don't get anything. If I let it set awhile it will start. No set conditions (hot/cold ect) Battery is good and it has done this with new and old starter. I have also tried to put in netruel and rock the car. Is there a switch that I can check that senses that it is in park? If so were is it located? Thanks, TNT

There is no Park sensor but there is a Neutral Safety Switch located in the side of the transmission, the switch only allows the starter to engage in Neutral and Park.

If it won't engage in Park try Neutral, if it works in Neutral check for worn or missing plastic bushings in the shift linkage.

If it won't work in either gear you can test the starter relay on the firewall by temporarily grounding the terminal marked "G" (brown wire) on the relay.

John, thank you for the imput. i did as you suggested and it started. Do you think I should replace the starter relay and the net.switch to be safe? Thanks again, TNT

If grounding the "G" terminal made it start, the relay is OK and the problem is in the NSS or the linkage adjustment.

Be sure that the shift linkage is correctly selecting Neutral and Park by disconnecting the linkage at the trans and operating the shift lever by hand. When the shift lever is full back (Park) the switch connector should be grounded when checked with a meter or test light, same for Neutral. If the switch is functioning correctly readjust the linkage or check for slop in the linkage.

I believe the problem is the Neutral switch. However I have only found a replacement switch with 3 prongs. It appears my trans only has 1 wire going to it. Any suggestions? TNT
