This may be a dumb question but here goes.

I have a 741 SG 3rd member with the older clutch style sure grip and a 489 non SG 3rd member.

I want to rebuld the 489 member and use the SG from the 741 member. Can this me done? I thought the SG units were interchangable between members, but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks,

Bolt it on. Just be sure to use the side bearings for the sure grip unit. remember that the ring gear bolts are left hand threads. Sure grips are inter-changable between cases. But must use the side bearings for the sure grip unit.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Good to know.

I want to rebuild the whole thing and put it in the 489 case so i need to be specific when ordering the bearing rebuild kit I imagine because I see the Power Lok SG's came in 69 and later 741 and 742 cases while the cone style SG came in the 489 case.

I found the clutches for the power lok. Does anybody have a copy of the FSM that shows the rebuild sequence? My 71 FSM does not cover it.

The outer diameter of the cup of the bearings are all the same. It is the inner diameter of the cone that is different between the cases. You will have to know what the suregrip came out of or take it to a parts store and find the bearings that fit.

contact dr. diff , the only way you are going to get the correct full bearing kit is thru someone like him as you need pinion bearings for the 489 case and carrier bearings for the 742/pre 69 741 case . I have had to piece the kit together by using 2 different kits I already had on hand from summit .

I'll PM the doctor because i don't think his site is running yet.

Any one got a pdf of the 68 FSM section on rebuilding the clutch type power lok Sure Grip?
