Got a set of spindles in from a wrecking yard Friday. One looks good, the other one is bluish purple in the area between the bearings and behind the inner bearing. I know this has been hot before, has anyone used one like this with sucess or should I scream to get it exchanged?

For the price of a set of bearing and races, replace them.

Spike, I think he is speaking only of the spindle. I have run into a lot of them that have that purple tint-even low mileage cars. I'm not so sure some of that heat wasn't induced from the machining process.

In my opinion, if it is questionable swap it. Blue is excessive heat, whether a bearing went bad or in the machining process of the spindle some serious heat got to it. Gotta be weaker than one that hasnt been cooked. Then again if they are boneyard parts, they might not be able to find another one.

I should have read it correctly instead of just skimming over the post.

Like mentioned, it may be tough to find a replacement spindle but I would try to find one.

Had a 38 Plymouth that had the same "issue".

Good luck finding a spindle for that one. Who knows how long it had been that way but after talking it over with an old timer, I forget what he said, I didn;t feel it was an issue. Heck it might have been a heat treating step int he machining for all I remember.
